Texas Woman Brings 400 Hamburgers To Help Hungry Harvey Victims – The Red Cross Pulled A Despicable Move Instead

Texans suffered greatly under the Hurricane Harvey’s aggressive landfall, with many people being left homeless, stranded or left with no basic necessities, such as food and/or water.

To aid the victims was a woman who brought a total of 400 hamburgers to the site and divided them to locals isolated from the rest.

This, however, didn’t seem appealing to the Red Cross, which decided to call the woman out on bringing the food there in the first place, and what they did next represents a pure absurdity at its best.

Lindsay Scott was able to bring 400 hamburgers to those affected by the heavy floods with a little help from a pilot, who volunteered to help out.

Scott, a Texas-born, was appalled to learn what the Red Cross had in store for her, saying their treatment was hostile, to say the least.

My sister says I can use her FB page to get something off my chest if I identify myself lol. This is Lindsey Scott, and…

‘I’m astonished at the behavior of the Red Cross husband/wife team at the mid-county Jack Brooks airport yesterday. Who together accosted me and took turns berating me because I was trying to bring 400 warm hamburgers to our hungry evacuees, who according to them did not need the food because they had “already had a sandwich.” Yes, they had 1sandwichh in 24 hours. They were desperate for a hot meal! The Red Cross proceeded to try and load the warm, ready to eat burgers into an ice chest.

The pilot, who had donated his time, fuel, money, plane and arranged the delivery of the burgers was horrified at not being able to serve them (he actually came to volunteer as well). I confess I just stood there with my mouth gaping open, fighting back tears while they told me that I did not know what I was doing and they had not even seen me volunteering.  This is not a normal reaction for me but either exhaustion or pregnancy hormones got the best of me because I simply couldn’t find the words to fight back…,’ she said.

‘The Red Cross was not there at 6:30 am when we got there to find we had no food to serve the 100s of evacuees who had sat on a bus all night and some who had not eaten in 24 hours. They were not there when the sun came up and they woke up hungry, angry, tired, scared, and frustrated. They did not see them fighting over donuts that OUR friends and family answered the call to bring at 7:00 am. They did not see the tears over dehydrated babies while we worked to arrange the delivery of Pedialyte and formula.

They showed up HOURS later…. when we had already coordinated the delivery of food and supplies with our LOCAL community members  (who came out in droves) and The Sky Hope Network through our wonderful State Representative Dade Phelan after just a single phone call.  And the reason they didn’t see me (sweating and sunburned) is because I spent most of the day on the aviation side of the airport on the tarmac coordinating the landing, unloading, and transport of supplies the Sky Hope Network was flying in all day. (which was no easy feat considering the insane, chaotic state of the Jerry Ware terminal).

I do not care they weren’t there (I understand the vast, severe, damage that ranges from Corpus, Rockport, Houston all the way to Louisiana). I do, however, care how they treated the people of our community when they arrived!’ she continued.

‘These supplies/donations were made by OUR LOCAL community members and the Sky Hope Network (not the Red Cross) and the Red Cross wanted them all shipped to their warehouse for processing and distribution. Apparently, they don’t do “local distribution.” Say what?! We need these things here, locally, NOW. And while we refused to turn away anyone who came on foot or by other means (evacuee or not) or any other church, group, or organization asking for supplies…the Red Cross tried to prevent us from sharing OUR donations (contributed by our community for our community and surrounding areas). The kids that are barefoot, need shoes NOW, not two weeks from now…and we had more than enough to share.’

‘And the way, these two representatives of Red Cross treated local people who were donating their time (many in the wake of having lost everything of their own) and spending countless hours away from their kids and families in the wake of such tragedy hurts my heart. I pray this is not representative of the Red Cross organization as a whole.

People who donate their money would be horrified. I’m thankful for our local volunteers who continued to fight with them (when I could not) and saw that the burgers and supplies were distributed to ALL those that needed them. As OUR motto was, we turn no one away,’ she explained.

The Red Cross was called out on numerous occasions about not doing enough or obstructing what other were doing to help Texans during the crisis.

Also, many reports suggested the Red Cross does not use all aid received during a particular crisis but sets aside monetary funds, which go to the organization’s personal benefit.

This goes to show that we do, indeed, live a semi-crooked society, ran by liberals. I wonder, doesn’t humanity strike them as necessary at times?

I can remember when the Owner of McDonalds in the 70’s or early 80’s took a couple thousand Pounds of Frozen Burgers to a storm zone to be fixed for the people. I think they went to Florida. The storm was in Florida also.

That is just what the RED CROSS is all about. check out what the ceo makes You might be surprise. Where is all of you money going it for sure is not helping the needy. I will never donate to them or the others because 90% of the money goes in their pockets not the needed.

I understand your frustration. A long time ago my Father needed help to get home after his Mother died and asked the Red Cross for help and they told him they could not help him. He was in the Navy at the time. He always told me not to donate to the Red Cross.

This is exactly why i give through my churches fund or one of our sister churches where I know that 100% of everything I give goes directly to the people needing the help. We have a sister church in Texas who is giving to those in need in their city. They use all volunteers and their church building for distributing items thus there is no overhead cost. I know that the Red Cross does good but they do follow their rules completely and don’t allow just anyone to come in and do what they want. They do have overhead so not everything that goes to them is given to the victims themselves. I understand over head and that as a group like this they have to do that. As a whole I think the Red Cross is a good group but I would prefer to give my resources to a group that doesn’t have the overhead and every penny can go those in need.

This is one reason I WILL NOT give to the Red Cross. I go for the Salvation Army who do things right.. Red Cross leader gets a humongus salary every year and a lot of that should be going where it is needed. Not to him/her. Where I think Salvation Army leader gets a very small salary each year. Please do not give to the Red Cross go to salvation Army instead. I have nothing to do with either of these organizations
but do not like the way the Red Cross works…
    Rant over..

    September 4, 2017 at 6:07 pm

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… DO
NOT DONATE to the Red Cross! Donate to your local agencies, Samaritans Purse, Salvation Army….they make sure that the food, clothing and money get to those that need it.

Unfortunately, not new NEWS. One more variation of old same old story. Overpaid and arrogant from top down. Can do much better (100%) looking at Salvation Army, among others whose EXPENSE % of collections is a token compared to RED CROSS which has just become another BIG BUSINESS!

Just another reason why I will NOT give to the red cross!!!

  13. Ray

Since I researched the Red Cross and found that they pay their CEO about one Million dollars a year I stopped giving to this fake charitable organization.when I last checked the CEO of the Salvation Army got about fifteen Thousand dollars a year. Check out the expenditure of a charity before giving. I still give blood though.

  14. Ms. Rissa Lynn Michelson

    September 4, 2017 at 6:21 pm

I hope this was an isolated incident and not one of the Red Cross Organization’s Policy. I have given of myself over 14 gallons of blood. If it is their policy, then my donations will cease. I will notify the org. of the reasons for the cesation of donations.

The Red Cross in the USA has been taken over by liberals and pro muslim groups.
That is why we are learning more and more about these episodes of misguided liberal rules according to their agenda, which is to take control of any and all institutions.
Remember, we as Americans do much better without the intervention of busy bodies either from the liberal government or the liberal groups who always seize the moment to take over any situation in order to advance their sick agenda. They are a bunch of losers!
Your comment about the R.C. using the funds they receive for their purposes other than the purpose for which these monies are sent by Americans is something that needs to be investigated!!

I too dealt with the red cross and will never give them a dime my husband was overseas and I had a miscarriage and was devastated and withdrew and did not write him , when he checked on me thru the red cross they told him I had an abortion which almost ended my marriage, then when I got enough money to join him overseas they told him I missed my flight and he did not meet my plane which interfered with my marriage again. they are not worth donating to

That’s why I don’t donate to the Red Cross. I’ve seen their spread sheets and how their revenues are distributed, they show up mostly for their political show and gain.

  23. irene gratopp

This happened here in Louisiana as well during previous hurricanes. This is the reason I do not donate any more to the Red Cross but make sure my donations go to churches or local organizations who have a vested interest in truly helping victims of disasters.

  27. Barb Harmon

    September 4, 2017 at 6:48 pm

Well, that settles that – the donation we were ready to send out will definitely go to Samritan’s Purse – Standing by rules and regulations and the way things “Must be done!” is ridiculous at a time like this. Everyone is trying to help and do not need it to be orchestrated. Especially those from that very same area who know firsthand where the need is the greatest at any point in time. So sorry this lady and her group needed to go through this – maybe the Red Cross needs to let the locals do what they can TOO. I know local churches, fire fighters, police – they are all doing what they can to help. The Red Cross should only do what they are there for — to put steaming hot food in coolers is totally ludicrous. Shame on them.

this isnt the first time for the red cross to blunder. in world war two the red cross sold candy bars to service men instead to handing out candy bars (hershey) had donated them. this told to me by my uncle Dick blunt. world war two survivor.

  32. Charlotte Wolfe

    September 4, 2017 at 6:57 pm

The Red Cross in Palm Beach County, FL has pulled out of a FUND RAISER that was to be held at Mar A Lago. They are TOO POLITICAL.If they are asking the PUBLIC for donations it doesn’t matter if the organizers don’t like the venue. I would NEVER EVER do anything to dissuade possible donations for a charitable entity. However it appears that the Red Cross is more self serving that serving people who need help. My opinion

  33. Jim Hart

    September 4, 2017 at 6:59 pm

I lost my home in a California forest fire in 2008. The Red Cross helped 11 people with $1000 each. They asked for donations from our community for 6 months after the fire, receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars. Red Cross is a scam. The Salvation Army did help. They are trustworthy.

  34. Susan Davis

    September 4, 2017 at 7:00 pm

The armed Cross is a bunch of greedy idiots. I would never donate a penny to this organization.
I have heard they billed the GIs comming home when they passed out donuts to them. I could
Go on and on with many horror stories about them. Samaritans Purse and Salvation Army
Is who you need to donate to.

  35. Louise parr

    September 4, 2017 at 7:01 pm

Well this does not surprise me we will never trust the Red Cross they are not using the money for the people it is used to line their own pockets or not for the people who need them I remember how they did the marines in Korea they charged then for the doenuts They will never get any money from me

  36. Pat

    September 4, 2017 at 7:01 pm

I have heard this about the red-cross before so I will not donate to them. Franklin Grahams Samaritans Purse and Operation Blessing are too good ones the give where it belongs and was intended for . The red cross pays its administrator and employees first and only 10% of donations goes to victims I have heard .

  37. D Milton

    September 4, 2017 at 7:02 pm

My father, who fought in WW2, would not give a penny to the red Cross because of how they treated soldiers during that war. He said he never got a donut from them that he didn’t have to pay for!!

I recall in other storms, the Red Cross was holding donations while people were still in need. I don’t give to them any more. I have other organizations I give to year round who know how to be there on the ready and stay u Gil people are coping better. They feed and help rebuild and love on people and work with others there. My husband paid over $100 for some emergency bucket that had next to nothing in it and we bought emergency supplies from other organizations that give you something for the money.

  40. william

    September 4, 2017 at 7:16 pm

Shame on you red cross, you all need to be investigated for keeping supplies from other crisis, I believe you do it AND TRUMP NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE WHEN HE GETS TIME TO ! HAMBURGERS LATER ! their hungary now not later you dumbasses, the kids need peideilite (?) for dehydrayation, shoes for their bare feet, come on are you all this crooked or just this stupid, yes distribution is good but if you have time ! you all are not even there when they wake up hungary like that lady said, now not later, looks like the community is doing a better job than red cross, what a shame, I just wonder if these people were imagrants how well would they be treated, probably like politition’s !

  41. Nelda MacLellan

    September 4, 2017 at 7:19 pm

This is very typical of the Red Cross. My father-in-law told of a story that he experienced years ago
While in the Merchant Marines. They would get cigarettes stamped donated by—–and the Red Cross
Would charge the guys for them. There have been countless examples of the Red Cross doing worse.
We donate to the Salvation Army & totally support them. There are other good organizations also.

  42. Allen Elliott

You were letting the love of God work through you, The red cross is after the money and power. Where the LOVE of anything other then unconditional love called God is evil

    • Allen Elliott

      September 4, 2017 at 7:27 pm

They changed the unconditional love of god into the images of Rom 1:23, 23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. KJV

  46. Gary L Griffiths

The Red Cross did the same thing here in Louisiana after the flooding in August last year, when volunteers tried to bring hot food to people in shelters. They threw the volunteers’ food in the garbage instead of allowing it to be distributed to hungry people. I do NOT give to the Red Cross!

  50. Dudley Wainright

So how do you define a “liberal”?????? Define for me just how you think our society is run by liberals. I assume that you mean any black person,Jewish or any non-white who does not honor President Trump and his do-nothing agenda is un-American!

  51. Martin GoldStein

The Red Cross has a history of callous behavior. The execs live like royalty on donated funds. I wouldn’t give them the sweat off my nose.

  52. G. Robert Jones

    September 4, 2017 at 7:50 pm

I remember my cousin telling me about the Red Cross selling months-old magazines to wounded Americans in the Korean War. I had to convince a Red Cross agent in Vietnam his health was in question if he didn’t allow me to use our MARRS set up to talk to my wife who had just had our baby girl. He complained to this Spec/4 making $400 or so a month he wasn’t paid enough to put up with this s___. Sounds like the Red Cross hasn’t changed much. (Please don’t hit me with stories of how much good they do. I’ve already heard it.)

  54. Earleen Bernard

Would never donate to the Red Cross. I have heard that don’t distribute what you donate. The had pallets of baby play pens sitting in their stock, that was donated and they told evacuees that they had none. Babies were sleeping on those nice comfortable cots.

  55. Belinda

    September 4, 2017 at 7:54 pm

The American Red Cross should not have the ability to demand that donated supplies sent to their neighboring communties families friends and strangers, to want to store those items. I say f&@& the red cross who are for profit mostly though thats not what theytell people. Their Ceo makes a fortune.

In my opinion, the ARC is nothing but POLITICALLY SUPPORTED MONEY MAKING SCHEME,derived from a long ago charity organization, corrupted by greed. My father told of the red cross coming around to American air fields in England, during WW2. They were there with coffee and donuts-IF you had the cash to pay them for it. I would never support their cause.

  68. Discouraged Rose

Example of how irrational “that mentality” totally are and how they ALWAYS seem to only create more problems so that somehow they can work on their little hidden agenda’s that have zero to do with solving any real problems at all!

  69. A. Evans

    September 4, 2017 at 8:41 pm

It is too bad that for whatever reason, the American Red Cross, over the years has seemed to find a way to displease people. I know that they do a lot to help in situations like this, but stories like this always seem to spoil it all when it isn’t necessary or proper. in my lifetime, I’ve heard so many complaints that could have been avoided if common sense was used. My Dad refused to give to the Red Cross due to an incident that happened to him when he went for his military induction physical for WWII. They gave him a donut and offered him a second one for a price that would have paid for two. He never got over it. The organization could do a lot better if they used better judgement. You have to point to leadership and instructions to the help needing improvement.

Please research the way Red Cross operates and what percentage of aid goes where it should. Remember, UMCOR gives 100% of what they collect to the intended cause!!

  72. Helen

    September 4, 2017 at 8:47 pm

This is one reason why I don’t contribute to the Red Cross. And, they spend too much in administrative costs, and, imo, not enough money and help goes to victims. I prefer to donate to other worthy causes like Samaritan’s Purse (established by Rev. Billy Graham’s son.) My help for Houston is going directly to friends who live there, to help their friends and neighbors with the clean up. I’m sending them an order from a well known retailer with free 2-day shipping, filled with cleaning supplies, and a box of personal care items like soap, shampoo, etc. And we’re contributing to causes that will get direct emergency help to aid the animals and pets there.

  73. Margaret M Cason

    September 4, 2017 at 8:49 pm

what you are stating about the distribution of funds, I found out from the Katrina disaster and was appalled! Millions of dollars were collected for them and years later they were still in disaster mode. I could not believe that all that money was taken to go elsewhere while they still suffered!! This is how they get their BIG salaries:(

  74. Dorothy Hunt

    September 4, 2017 at 8:51 pm

The Red Cross, I stopped giving to the Red Cross years ago. They take your money and then when you need them, they are not there. They want the glory but don’t really help people that need it. Give your money to other charities!!! DO NOT GIVE TO THE RED CROSS!!!!

  75. Shelbia Farmer

    September 4, 2017 at 8:52 pm

I have heard so many bad things about the Red Cross, they should be ashamed of themselves. All those people are without homes, cars and no where to go. My Sunday School class gave to the Franklin Graham,s Samantas purse, didn’t trust the Red Cross.

What do liberals have to do with this? These people don’t represent me. I’m appalled at the way you were treated. Put the blame on the husband/wife team who were actually the ones at fault. Believe it or not, loads of people who’ve been helping each other out in Houston are liberals.

I am hoping this is fake news, and will look forward to hearing more on this subject… In 2000 we lost our home to a wildfire and they treated us very well, so over the years we have given back as we could… I must say the Salvation Army was extra wonderful with delivering food… All in all, though, we were responsible for ourselves and our well being.. I can’t imagine having no family or bank account to turn to in such a terrible situation…

If you donate without using the Red Cross which sees itself as the supreme relief Empire, then you are taking away from their glory/power.

People need to know that the red cross as well as the united way keep’s more then half the donation’s to pay them self’s as well as stock pile there building’s to do with as they will I stopped giving to them about 10 year’s ago when I found all this out. Always give to the Samaratans purse and any of your local church’s and food pantry’s those are the people that will really helpin ti,e’s of need.

So common for the selfish Red Cross! I have seen their unscrupulous ways almost 30 years ago! They want all the glory and praise for any humanitarian aid when all they did was show up no take over with their holier tha. Thou attitude, I will NEVER, NEVER, EVER give one red dime to the Red Cross. I prefer to give through the local Salvation Army as they use the money to take care of many needs of the people without taking for themselves as most are volunteers.

  82. Victoria Radin

    September 4, 2017 at 9:10 pm

The Red Cross is the WORST charity to donate to. The executives get huge salaries and they never use all the money donated for the purpose intended. In fact, my husband remembers on his way home from the battlefield, the Red Cross demanded that they donate money before they would get a snack. Disgusting organization. Give to Samaritan’s Purse or the Salvation Army.

  83. Joseph Edwards

    September 4, 2017 at 9:11 pm

The Red Cross is a world wide organization to scam people that are willing and want to help people that are in need. you give a hundred dollars to the Red Cross about 1% goes out to the ones that need it. That’s one dollar out of one hundred, where do you think the rest go? To make a few in the scam business rich. nough said.

I hope they did not put those burgers in an ice chest, because they would not be safe to eat later. Also, the last paragraph is puzzling. Does the author not know that Donald Trump and the Republicans in Congress do not consider themselves liberals? Not that the government is in charge of the Red Cross, anyway.

I don’t donate to Red Cross, I have heard horror stories
For many years mostly from servicemen. Right now in Oregon w have many wildfires and like Texas we are neighbors helping neighbors . I donate locally , no salaries paid all money collected go to those affected directly. The Red Cross was here but pulled out just as much as more evacuations were ordered.

I learned the true RED CROSS in 1999 — in a tornado that wiped out a subdivision I live in and took ( 5 ) lives. There was MORE HELP from the Salvation Army — Hobo Soup = Cold drinks = Chips= Candy //// Red cross no food but I did get a broom and dust pan that you can buy at the Dollar store for $1.00 — Check the RED CROSS out where their money goes . It is unreal

My husband and I left our RV by choice and headed NE of Houston for 4 days. Then went back home, after finding a route that was not still flooded. Thank God our place was not damaged. Our main concern now is my brother-in-law and his wife, who live in an apartment in Beaumont. They were unable to leave, due to the rising water and road closures. She is a diabetic and in a wheelchair most of the time and he has a heart condition. Then on top of that, the city of Beaumont has no water supply. They couldn’t get help from FEMA because Beaumont did not have a mandatory evacuation. That concerns me, if the community didn’t have water to drink or bathe, why didn’t the Mayor make it mandatory to leave. After the water receded, he made it to a church that was giving out bottled water and PBJ sandwiches (my understanding, she is not suppose to have). He had trouble getting through to the Red Cross. So, I called them a couple of days ago and told a woman about their situation. She was very helpful to give me a number for them to call, so she could get her diabetes medicine, as well as, three shelters (outside of Beaumont),they could go to. This was a different situation than Mrs. Scott went through, but Red Cross was very helpful. He checked out the shelters and they wouldn’t accept pets, (her mother is also living with them). Living on disability, they couldn’t afford to stay at a hotel, so it looks as if they are forced to remain in Beaumont. Now that their rent is due, he has not been able to find a location that has an ATM working and fears that the landlady will evict them. I looked up some into today and gave it to him that I pray will help them. My heart goes out to the people at Jack Brooks airport, my Beaumont family and all those who have been affected by the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. I know many who would do just about anything to get a good, hot meal. So, sorry that an organization, such as the Red Cross could be so heartless. However, my understanding is that it is a liability if someone got sick, (not that I’m excusing their actions). Thanks for all you efforts and hard work…way to go Texans!

I do not donate to the Red Cross. Years ago I lived in Ohio just east of Columbus, when we were hit by a tornado. This tornado cut swath 20 miles long and about half a mile wide across Licking County. The Red Cross showed up to help. We didn’t use their services but a few of our neighbors did. They have all said they would never do it again as they received a bill for Red Cross services. Since then I tell anyone wanting to donate to them, to not do so and tell them why.

The Red Cross is nothing but a piece of crap. Their salary structure is a disgrace, The person who is in charge receives a ton money for doing nothing. Too much money and goods that never reach the people that should be helped. I never donate to the Red Cross, they are a dead end when it comes to helping people in trouble. The Salvation Army has the best record in helping those in need.

  102. Cathy

    September 4, 2017 at 9:45 pm

Give to the Salvation Army more of the money goes to those they are helping and not as much goes to administration like the red cross. Look it up

  103. Mary K. Smalley

    September 4, 2017 at 9:46 pm

I have not had good experiences with the Red Cross. We had an airplane crash into homes in Alameda, Ca. in the 70’s. The Red Cross was on hand giving out blankets. They insisted on getting names and addresses from the recipients. Not for follow up but to send them a bill for the blanket, coffee and donuts they passed out.
Only 3% of the donations they collect go to the cause. The rest is ripped off for Administration; Salaries, cars and new buildings. San Diego built a multi million dollar building in the 80’s and paid their director over $300,000. dollars salary in the 80’s. I am sure it is more now.
I will not give them a dime. Give my money to the Salvation Army.

While I can absolutely sympathize with the above story……who knows what is actually true. You know if you hear it on the internet it HAS to be true…right? I also had heard not to donate to the Red Cross. I have seen and heard too much in the past. Heard some pretty rough stories about the Red Cross efforts in Viet Nam.I Hope if this is true, it is more isolated than indictitive of the Red Cross as a whole. Hard to believe they would try to keep food, regardless of who had donated it, from hungry refugees.d I Hope this can be checked out and I want to make it clear that I am not accusing anyone of misleading the public about the Red Cross. Truth anyone?

  106. Mel Canon

    September 4, 2017 at 9:57 pm

My wife and I discontinued contributions to the Red Cross years ago. Mostly due to the way they absorbed such a large percentage of all contributions for their internal use. And due to the fact that the director is paid such a high salary. We prefer organizations such as Samaritan’s Purse for our donations…just sayin’.

As I read this, I was wondering “why don’t they just take the couple from the Red Cross down and do it the right way” It seems someone did. Thank God for hard working people with common sense. This is exactly why I give to local charities and not to the Mega So=Called charities. I am in North Carolina. We have been gathering supplies to send by the truckload. Sounds like the Red Cross. My family and everyone I can talk with DOES NOT DONATE TO THE RED CROSS. Where does all the money go too that they receive. Do they ever let anyone know how much they raise and where did it go? NO. There are so many more organizations out there that will put the monies raise to good use. Do Not Ever donate money, even a dime to the Red Cross. How much money does their top dogs make? Much more than any president!

Well, the Red Cross is far from a liberal organization and far from the help that is truly needed in a disaster like Texas is experiencing.

They ALWAYS try to block any other group from doing anything to help unless they go through them.

I think anyone that can and wants to help should be allowed. I’m sure folks would have been more than happy to get a hot hamburger.

I’m sorry you experienced this. I’ve heard it’s common with the Red Cross though.

You can give the red cross all the money you want but they will put it out where ever they want. If you want to contribute do it locally. Not the red cross. I think of all the millions the movie start and singer donated and Huston and other cities will get hardly any of it. Think twice before you donate.

At his is why I do not give to the Red Cross. Most of the money donated is given to their higher up officers. I wanted the money I gave to go to people who needed it. Not to their board members.mmthis was wrong, for them to do this. I would have grabbed, them and pulled them away from my burgers. To bad you did not, give their names. They should have landed in the water. Where did they get their authority anyway. I thought that if you donated something for someone, it did,not have to go through an organization. I think the Red Cross should have to pay for all of the burgers. When I lost my home and everything to fire we got a little help from the Red Cross. Shoe, socks, and cheap underwear. That was all. We got a garage full of stuff donated from our friends. Even the Salvation Army gave us a box of clothes. It was clothes that department stores could not sell as they had faded from hanging so long. Many items were the same. I had just lost my house I was not destitute. Shame on these two people. Where was there hearts.Just trying to make,a name for themselves.. ” Look what I did”. They evidentially did,not care about the people that had nothing. Hungry or not. After all they had a sandwich 24 hours earlier. Lock these two up and don’t feed them for awhile. I’ll bet they’ll want more than a sandwich in 24 hours. You did good lady. At least you cared and tried.

I don’t support the Red Cross, never did. I was in disaster response for over twenty years and saw them treat disaster victims like crap many times.

If you donate money to the Red Cross, you need to know that FEMA reimburses the Red Cross for much of their disaster expenses. Your donations also go to help pay their full time employees.

Their management on disasters is akin to the Keystone Cops. They also pick and choose who they help.

Support other charities like the Salvation Army and other legit charities.

  128. MaryLena Anderegg

Sounds Like FEMA. We Ran into the same type of thing during Katrina. Brought out 8 student nurses to volunteer their knowledge and time , plus 3 trailer loads of supplies. When we showed up they said it Wasn’t a dumping ground for the supplies and didn’t know what to do with the nurses. They put two to work checking victims in and wanted All the nurses to stay in a building (Apt.) no security, We. The husbands were Not aloud to stay with them. Well we opened all the trailers, just off of Fema’s taped off area and gave away everything we had. People were walking and driving up to get it. All victims were Very greatfull. And I and the 8 Nurses turned around and headed back to Florida with a Very Bad Taste of Fema !!

Sorry to hear you had to experience this horrible conduct from the Red Cross, but it’s not surprising to me. My husband and I were volunteers after Katrina at the Cajun Dome in Lafayette, Louisiana and experienced the same conduct with the Red Cross, to the point that my husband was almost arrested because he refused to let them treat the victims in such horirfic ways.

This is quite common for Red Cross. My first exposure to this kind of action was while fighting flood waters as a National Guardsman in May of 1958. I’ve seen similar actions since and once slept on the street with my pregnant wife because Red Cross couldn’t be bothered to help us.

  133. dennodog

    September 4, 2017 at 10:39 pm

Two nitwits tried to stop all of you? What is their authority? Is control over a disaster area their domain? Ignore them

  134. Evelyn Street

    September 4, 2017 at 10:40 pm

I watched afar when Louisiana went through the great bad flood last year. The Red Cross turned home made food from people that strived to help their neighbors and strangers. Not even bottled water (sealed) and individual bags of chips. The Red Cross could only use their vendors. I understand food safety but come on!

  135. Jeannie James

    September 4, 2017 at 10:42 pm

I learned years ago how bad this organization treats people– how few pennies of each dollar actually goes to help those in need. Because they have been around for so long and have grown in number, it makes their very little that is given seem like a lot. My hope and prayer is that people will wake up to reality and give where it will truly help. We wanted to help Texas, so gave to Samaritans Purse. We also give to Salvation Army– they are truly GREAT!!

Apparently the Red Cross has been “that” (self serving) way for a LONG time. I can recall my dad, who served with the AAF in Britain, at Mildenhall, as a B-24 navigator during WW2, telling me that the Salvation Army stood HEAD and SHOULDERS above the Red Cross in their efforts to serve the troops. His exact words were not as kind as those I have used. ELK (USNA ’68)

Many years ago during a Missouri River flood…. volunteer sand baggers were desperately trying to stave off the flood water. Many were volunteers for the local Chamber who had prepared sandwiches for the sandbaggers. Red Cross people took the sandwiches and were asking for money from the sand baggers for a sandwich. Red Cross people seemed desensitized and/or very poorly trained. Since that episode,I only give to Salvation Army.

I learned many years ago that the Red Cross is NOT GOOD. Most of the money goes to the TOP MEN AND WOMEN. I never ever donate to them or to anyone who is giving to the red cross. I’m old enough to have seen and heard all about the red cross.

  144. Penn

    September 4, 2017 at 11:02 pm

“society, ran by liberals?” This isn’t a political issue. I would never donate to the Red Cross because of their sketchy reputation. I give to Direct Relief but haven’t a clue if they have a political agenda or not. Who cares? All we should care about is getting help to those who need it.

    September 4, 2017 at 11:03 pm

It is down right rude of the Red Cross, I can remember when there was a flood in the Pa area and I knew a lot of people who went to help, and the Red Cross charged mind you charged for a bottle of water, I myself would not give one thing or my time to the Red Cross

God bless you for your sensitivity and time you took to make all those hamburgers for your hungry “brothers and sisters” who had only one sandwich in 24 hours. What an absolute shame you had to go through such rudeness and inhumanity. Clara Barton would be embarrassed and extremely sad.

  148. Bernie MacDonald

    September 4, 2017 at 11:07 pm

I used to be a Red Cross volunteer until I heard about how much of donations went for program costs like salaries and utilities and how little actually went to help the needy. I’m pretty sure they wanted to control the delivery of the burgers so they could take credit for it. Once it was processed into their facility they could claim they were distributing donated food.

  149. Bertrand Reed

    September 4, 2017 at 11:10 pm

I have had dealings with the Red Cross numerous times in the past and will never deal with them ever again. I have seen with my own eyes them charge folks for donuts and coffee that had been donated for the relief effort and this was back in 1974 in Xenia, Ohio when all the tornadoes hit that community. I could go on but I tend to get angry so I’ll just leave it alone. I will say however that whatever the Red Cross claims to be a charitable organization they are not.

  150. Liz

    September 4, 2017 at 11:11 pm

I live here and that article is misquoted. It was 23, NOT 400, and the Red Cross cannot accept food unless it is boxed and packaged individually from an approved source. It was wonderful for that lady to do. The problem is that the Red Cross volunteer did a crappy job of explaining that.

You have to wonder where common sense goes when there is such a disaster? Apparently, the Red Cross needs to be re-organized and let some of the lay people who do understand human suffering and need organize and do what is needed, they do a better job and it’s because they care AND, THEY DO NOT GET PAID for doing the job.

WTF does any of this have to do with liberals? Get your head out of your arse and realize that bull shite like this is non-denominational and bipartisan!! I am as liberal as they come (tho I do LOVE my guns) and this story APPALLED me! Most of my liberal friends have been posting links telling folks to NOT give to the Red Cross because it is a bureaucratic mess of an organization whose original mission has been warped so bad by red tape and corruption it is unrecognizable and, most of all, only about 10% of your donation actually goes to help those in need.

The director of the Red Cross is paid a million a year with jots of benefits, Their directors are equally well cared for. Friends from my area traveled down to make donations on the local level but were turned back by the Red Cross. They went to another location and handed out their supplies. This has been going on for decades.

Even when they are involved with the military. Sergeants I had remembered during the invasion of Panama they sat on the runways at Ft Bragg. Red Cross came out and charged for snacks and dring. Salvation Army showed up and handed everything out for free. Because of that I give to the Salvation Army.

I have no use for the red cross ,look what they did in haiti .Got billions of dollars t build small houses .Build 2 and run out of money . In Florida people send NEW clothing ,they just got tossed in a parkng lot in the rain . I will not even say what they did to me after my son had his accident in the military.
No I give to any group but Red Cross .

I am a liberal and I resent your pairing the Red Cross with me. Liberals are not the ones in charge of the Red Cross — I believe Elizabeth Dole – Rep was once their Pres. or CEO. My mother told me years ago that during WWII that the Red Cross did little to help. I agree with you entire letter except the last sentence. You are wrong.

I volunteered at the Red Cross and have seen them refuse home made food donations. My understanding is they do not distribute food brought to the shelters due to not knowing if it was prepared and cooked to health standards and meet the minimum holding temperatures. It is a liability thing.

Red Cross at its normal best !! Few veterans have much good to say about the organization.

Jamie, YOU GO GIRL!!! I’m so proud you got the hamburgers distributed as you intended. As I was reading your post I was afraid you were going to say the Red Cross prevented the distribution of the food. I am so glad you posted the story because although this may not be a good representation of the Red Cross it IS something that needs to be put out there. These people are desperate, confused, homeless, depressed, hungry and the lest the Red Cross should have done is HELP distribute the food. I’m in Florida and there is a chance Hurricane Irma may hit us. I just pray it doesn’t, but if it does I pray we don’t get the same treatment from the Red Cross that those poor folks got. God bless you and all the volunteers!!

The red cross is not the place I would ever donate my money to. They have a very bad name now for not living up to what they say. this is horrible what happened to this lady. Those people deserve to be fed…..and they so called red cross workers who did this should be disiplined.

I’m sure this does not represent the mindset of the entire Red Cross. Maybe they were also cold, tired, wet, hungry, and frustrated, not realizing you can be 100% more of all of the above as a refugee. These people probably thought they had it all under control, but they did not. What a shame this had to happen. These should have been dispensed immediatley to those you brought them to…

I have read similar stories before in other disasters. This is why I do not donate to Red Cross. They are many other organizations to donate to that I feel better about. Most churches are taking donations and they are going directly to the affected areas. I just pray the Red Cross does not get in the way. My prayers to all the victims.

The same thing happened in Vietnam. Our ship’s bakers stayed up all day and night to make donuts for the troops we were to be picking up off the beach. Red Cross grabbed all the donuts and started SELLING them for a dime with a cup of watered down coffee. Our Captain came out and put a stop to it. Even threatened to turn them over to the VC. Red Cross and help really don’t go together very well with me. This is just another prime example of how they work.

  177. James Job

The Red Cross is one of mthe worst charities to give your money to. The pay very high wages to directors and only a small amount actually goes to help those in need.Consider the Salvation Army or other group who has volunteer directors and a high percentage actually going to their victims.

  178. D. Parker-Whitis

    September 5, 2017 at 12:03 am

Great story. Pity you had to ruin it by slamming “Liberals”. At this time when so many are in need, we as a nation must pull together, instead of dividing up into more splintered groups.
    Who does that help?
At the end of the day, we are one race, there should be no color, religious, sexual or political differences.

The American Red Cross is know for its lack of caring. They will not disclose how much of the donations is actually used for charity. They use to say 91% but that number is not used anymore as it was published that it spends $30 for every $100 donated. They also claim a overhead of 11%. The most accurate number I found is only 36 reached charities. United Way is better with 51%. Both are horrible numbers. Give your money and supplies to your local churches who will actually give it all to those in need.

My Dad turned me against the American Red Cross. While in a hospital in WWII the Red Cross actually charged wounded soldiers, who’s pay had not caught up with their movements for months so they were broke, for cigarettes, drinks, and sandwiches. The US tobacco companies had donated the smokes, the beverages and food had also been donated. However, the USO helped distribute without charge the same donated products donated to them from the USA and local churches.

When I was younger and collecting for the Red Cross (back in the 50’s) many people turned me away and said they would not give to the Red Cross because of how their sons, husbands, etc were treated by the Red Cross in the military. I do not give to the Red Cross………Church groups, Salvation Army, etc as this left a bad taste in my mouth to hear this. THis is still going on , this many years later????????????
I also do not donate to GOODWILL after seeing for myself the little (very little) help they gave to the tenants of a burned out apartment. “We will give them a 10% discount” No kidding and this stuff is donated??????????? nor will I buy from them at their outrageous prices for items they received for free. St. Vincent De Pauls is another one I give to generously

You, my friend, did the right thing. It is becoming ‘wrong’ to send money to charities that aren’t local and well known. Wrong because your money doesn’t go to do the good you desire. Help in those places closest to you and do it personally!

I agree, it is really upsetting, but the author lost me in the end by blaming “liberals”. What the heck does that have to do with anything? Its plain bureaucracy and makes no sense. During hurricane Katrina my husband and I drove to Mississippi to give supplies to those in need. It was evident then, that the Red Cross and other services had not made it to smaller communities. More and more I am not a fan of the Red Cross.

Have lost all enthusiasm for the RC. Their management is making a killing (BIG $$$!!!) off our misery. Found this out when I made a HUGE donation to RC during GA floods in mid-1990’s. Not much ended up in West GA where it was specifically requested to be delivered. Have since moved on to local churches, local groups, and the Salvation Army. I think my contributions are better served now.

This is why I will never donate to the Red Cross. I am 83 yrs. old and I very vividly remember my uncle telling me during WW2 of how when he arrived in Belgium by military train the Red Cross was selling coffee & donuts on the platform and at the same time the Salvation Army was giving away the same thing. The president of the Red Cross makes a salary over $100,000 a year. The head of the Salvation Army makes $12,000 and gets a modest home to live in. That is why anything I have to give goes to the Salvation Army. 98% of donations goes to people who need it!

The money that is spent by the Red Cross organization out of donations is pitifully low compared with many other organizations…in other words, so much is skimmed off the very top prior to money
that is actually spent on benefiting those that the donors had intended to receive

    Screw THE RED CROSS…….

    September 5, 2017 at 1:00 am

There are many many other stories of how horrible the RED CROSS is, from what I gather from peoples fb post if true, the Red Cross does not get paid for the food unless they use their own food, so if other people bring food in, that is less money they get from government. We had this same problem with Red Cross for the flood in August of last year. They need to be thouroughly investigated now, while it is going on, not later when there is no proof of what they are doing, I will never donate to the red cross again.

“This goes to show that we do, indeed, live a semi-crooked society, ran by liberals. I wonder, doesn’t humanity strike them as necessary at times?”

It is absolutely despicable, despicable, to use this story to accuse liberals of something they would never, ever support. The Red Cross is a conservatively-run corporation that smacks of internal graft and a hierarchy that little benefits the common disaster victim. That is quite the opposite of liberal, wonder what the word is for that? Oh that’s right, Conservative Media.

The Red Cross doesn’t want any one treading on their territory . They want to do the least yet get ALL the credit they can . They serve meager meals , but want all the credit for having served MEALS !!!! One sandwich in 24 hrs. is not enough for a 9 yr. old child , let alone an adult working for hours during such hard work !!!! why don’t you look into how much the CEO of the Red Cross makes a year ! Look up the car they drive !!!! Only 8 cents off of a dollar goes to the victims !!!!!!

I said yes but it didn’t take long before I learned that the Red Cross was not doing anything to help people!!! So I told every one I knew about these crooks !!! They are helping them selves not anyone that really needs help!!!! Check it out and you will see !!!

The Red Cross today is a big business and 93% of the money goes to ADmin so to speak. Your are absolutely correct. I have been trying to donate gift cards to give to people but I can’t find anyone that I can trust to see that these things are bought and distributed. I have been trying to find animal shelters as well but there is so much crap to go through I get lost. They don’t make it simple. I am in Mass and all I have is on line information which becomes endless to find a direct shot.

You should be outraged. That kind of behavior is disgusting. However, how did you get to “a semi-crooked society, ran by liberals.” Did you ask those people their voting preferences? I’ve never found ignorance and selfishness to be limited to one political party. There was a great deal of controversy with the Red Cross years ago when it was found that Elizabeth Dole (Sen Dole’s wife) was making a very nice 6-figure income running the Red Cross. I have not donated to the RC since that time. I donate to my Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and I can specify where I want my donation to go, no overhead, no administrative costs, ALL VOLUNTEER, and no one cares who you vote for or who you pray to.

  219. Pamela Blue

    September 5, 2017 at 1:32 am

I have, for years, refused to donate to the Red Cross, for the simple reason that they keep most of the funds to themselves, and, as you have discovered, try to take the credit for the work that others do. If they can’t get control, they try to disrupt what others do. They were donated thousands upon thousands of dollars for the Haiti earthquake. They stated that they built hundreds of homes for the homeless. When someone actually checked to see these houses, they could only find 6 – SIX houses!!!! Where did that money go? Obviously into their own pockets. So – NEVER give money to the Red Cross. They are a crooked, self-serving organization who truly don’t care about the needy. Give your money to the Salvation Army, or a church group, who WILL use it to help the poor. My father, who fought in WWII, said that when the Red Cross arrived, they were always ticked off because the Salvation Army had always got there first and were doing for the people what the Red Cross could/would never do. And we’re talking WWII here!

  220. Jan Pauley

This is not the first time I have heard of the Red Cross dping such things. I personally do NOT give to the Red Cross because of number of times I found that they did such things as this. They certainly had no right to tell the volunteers that they couldn’t give these poor hungry souls, the food that had been donated for them!! I’m very sorry for the volunteers to have gone through that!! Thank you all for your kindness!

  221. Judy Anders

    September 5, 2017 at 1:35 am

I too have heard stories of the Red Cross disposing of donated clothes that other organizations or people had given because those donations had not come from the Red Cross. That is just plain crazy. So many in need of food and clothing with so many willing to give to fill a need….and the Red Cross refusing to allow them to be given out!! God Bless you Sky Hope Network for all you have done, and shame on the Red Cross for negating the many kind and caring folks so willing to try to help those in need.

I will not donate to the Red Cross. The CEO or whatever the title has a salary of over $300,000.00. The Salvation Army leader does the same work in the US for $14,000. the last time I checked. You are right about the these self proclaimed do gooders who know how to bark orders.
During a flood in Bismarck, ND a few years ago people were cooking meals and delivering it to the sandbaggers who really appreciated when some self righteous big-wig in state politics came in and shut it down and mandated everything come from a store and was sealed so know one would put poison in it I guess. That left a very sour taste in everyone’s mouth.

The Red Cross has a terrible reputation from overpaying their officers to not distributing food after 9/11. I give my money to other charities such as Salvation Army and The Danny Thomas hospital in Memphis St. Jude’s. St Jude does not charge the patient for care at their hospitals.

I was living in Venice, LA in 1969 when Hurricane Camille hit the mouth of the Mississippi River and hit the tiny village and wiped out most homes below Buras, LA. After flood waters were pumped out, I returned to find only a slab remained of the house I was living in. The Red Cross had set up a tent in the parking lot of the destroyed HEB grocery store. I along with a couple of guys I was with stopped and got a cup of coffee and a donut. They charged us $1.25. Up until that time,I had contributed to the Red Cross every year but have not given them a dime since. Instead,I give to the Salvation Army which I believe returns more of the funds donated to those in need.

The Red Cross is a poorly-rated charity. From what understand, only about 8% of donations are used for charitable purposes; the rest goes to line their own pockets. Who put them in charge, anyway? No one! I read this article with great sympathy for the good-hearted volunteers and how they were treated. That is, until I read the closing statement: “This goes to show that we do, indeed, live a semi-crooked society, ran by liberals.” I beg your pardon, but you conservatives are the ones who DO NOT CARE about people, who oppose social programs that help people who are down on their luck, who want to decrease taxes to where our vital infrastructure falls completely apart, and who elected a self-centered, bigoted, misogynistic, racist moron who is out to destroy everything *real* Americans hold dear in our country! And what does the closing political statement have to do with the Red Cross, anyway? Nothing at all! It reads like just another jab to increase the great divide that is tearing our country apart!

I myself do not give to the Red Cross because I know how much money they use for fund raising and administrative costs. A dear friend of mine told how years ago a river was overflowing its banks and the men folk were filling sand bags and trying to keep the water back. She and the other women made sandwiches to feed their husbands. The Red Cross offered to take them down so the ladies didn’t have to drive down in the bad weather. My friend thought that was very sweet! When her husband came home the next day,he wasn’t happy the ladies didn’t feed them and they had to buy sandwiches off the Red Cross for 5.00 a sandwich.Back then, that was highway robbery!!She never gave another dime to Red Cross again nor would she even give blood to them!

Lindsey, they were jealous of you. You had it all set up. They were late coming in and saw how you were doing. Which was great! Wish I was there with you. I would have straightened that krink in their back right out! Anyway, I just wanted to say, for one pregnant Lady, you did a heck of a lot. I’m proud of you. Thanks for sharing you story. Rest now!

That is why I won’t give a red cent to the RED CROSS!!! They CHARGE people in need and that has been proven many times! I wish they’d quit pretending to be a helping organization and let people know how they pay their CEO’S and other (important?) frauds who collect the money and in instances just like this… have NO FEELINGS FOR THE PEOPLE WHO WORK VERY HARD!!!

I can testify from personal experience that this is typical behavior on the part of the Red Cross. In fact, my husband and his father ran a carpet cleaning business in the 1960’s and were called upon to clean the carpet in the Red Cross president’s office. It was the most expensive, plush carpet they had ever seen.

Check out the salaries of the executives of the Red Cross – they are despicable. Leftists complain about the allegedly greedy corporate leaders but never question the greed of the Red Cross and other “philanthropic” organizations.

This…..unfortunately, is what the Red Cross does. It’s apparent that if they aren’t getting the credit…..then it’s no bueno. They’ve even gone as far as too turn away clothes that were donated because 1) they weren’t sorted too their liking. 2) weren’t “properly ” folded.
The ONLY thing I donate to the Red Cross is blood.
God bless you for your wonderful efforts.

This sounds typical for Red Cross from many stories I have heard before. I think there a lot of great people that work for R C but this the “Workers” the organizers are miserable to deal with…They want all the glory…that and MONEY are the only reason they are involved.

The Red Cross pays their people that are salaried quite well! Back when Elizabeth Dole was the top person in the Red Cross, she was paid 1 million dollars a year! It’s a business just like any other business & it’s not at all what it wants people to think it is! I used to donate to them until I learned the truth & will never donate to them again! The Salvation Army is up front about their organization & gets my donations now!

  260. Pat

    September 5, 2017 at 2:44 am

I’ve had no use for the Red Cross for years. Just the amount their CEO is paid is enough to tell me they’re not what they claim to be. Just compare them with the Salvation Army, Samaritan’s Purse, and many other groups and see how they measure up. That’s easy to find online. A while back our church was collecting donations to take to some disaster and I was in the process of putting things together at home to take over there. Before I delivered it, I saw in our church bulletin that the Red Cross said we could not send certain items and it was easy to see they planned to ramrod it all. I just put my things back away and sent a donation to Samaritan’s Purse because I know they use it right. Same with our denomination when they are allowed to handle things themselves. If the Red Cross is involved, I personally want no part of it.

I experienced the same with the Red Cross during Katrina. I was part of a volunteer organization that the Mayor had sanctioned and given full right to connect communication chains. As I would stay up day and night finding lost family members for loved ones in the Astro Dome or GRB Center I found that the Red Cross didn’t even have contact information for their other shelters. They were no help to me in getting transportation for loved ones to reunite. I went outside of the Red Cross and had all people reconnected with loved ones they thought were dead – within 24 hours of finding them. The Red Cross – couldn’t do anything but yell at me and tell me they didn’t have time for “these” people. Direct words out of their mouths when I asked for help until I learned they weren’t going to help. I began to feel the Red Cross was only for those who desire a position of power during a crisis – nothing more.

I been telling people how sorry the Red Cross really are many years ago my family needed help in a very big way for which we had a family member with Muscular Dystrophy and we asked that help with buying his motorized wheel chair and we were told flat out no but you didn’t tell my family no when we had countless road blocks and gave every last cent to the Red Cross year after year we had at least 4 a year and you gladly took the money!! So when I was hired as an employee working in the Payroll Department I was told I had to have money taken out of my check for The Red Cross and I told them flat out no I didn’t it wasn’t mandatory and to try and make me or any one else! They ask Angie why do you feel so strongly about this matter and I told them what had took place many years ago after all we had done for this so called wonderful group who helps everyone and i told them the Red Cross is about paying for all their big Position holders and in my book they are a piece of crap taking from people who need it that’s why!! So all you people giving all this money to them I hope and pray you know what your doing!!

Bravo to you, Mrs. Scott, and to the pilot and the other volunteers who stayed strong in spite of the American Red Cross. This isn’t the first time I have heard of the “questionable” tactics of the Red Cross. My uncle told me that during WWII the USO gave soldiers food, and the Red Cross charged them for it. He told me after experiencing that, he wouldn’t give another dime to the Red Cross. He donated to WORTHY charities though!

The Red cross is a whole different kind of organization. With a paid CEO who make millions a year and they only give out $0.14 of the money that is contributed. Is it any wonder that the locals have to fend for themselves. The Red Cross will not get any more of my donations.

I wouldn’t give the red cross the time of day. My sister was treated so bad by them years ago. Her husband dropped her and her 3 kids off at my mothers and just left them there one of those kids was very sick !. My mom had other children and took my sister there to see if they could help her because my mom didn’t have much to help her with but a place to stay. They gave my sister 8 dollars. We were dumb founded because they are there to help people. And so when I see red cross wanting donations, I cannot bring my self to give them anything, God forgive me !Because I am afraid that they are not using the money they way they should ! And being unkind to people is not how they should be.I would donate and have to other charities but not the red cross !

From what I’ve learned over many years is that the Red Cross is a “sucko” organization! Sure they may help a small number of the population, on occasion, but, by and large they tend to feather their own nests! Our contributions should go elsewhere!

  276. Tricia Moore

My Grandma once told me about a time, while my Grandpa was serving our Country in WWII, she had gone to the American Red Cross for assistance. There were many such wives and children, at that time, struggling to get by, and they were grateful for the assistance received from the American Red Cross and asked for only what they needed.

After WWII ended and soldiers returned home to their wives and families, they too, felt grateful for the generosity and goodwill of the organization who watched out for theirs while they were overseas fighting.

Then about 2 years later there came in the mail a letter demanding payment for assistance received, including interest. They were required to set up a payment plan, else their “credit” be would be damaged. So they did, as did many families, regardless of the burden of hardship it placed upon them.

Grandma said, they could not be trusted and they were not concerned about people only “lining their pockets through the desperation of people in need.” She said, that after that, the people of her generation called them the “American Double Cross.”

    Apparently, they haven’t changed.

The Red Cross did the SAME thing inBaton Rouge last year during the flooding! SHAME ON THE RED CROSS!

This is not new for the Red Cross. When my father was in WWII – they took pictures to send home of the soldiers holding a coke. My dad did not have 5 cents on him at the time. They refused to let him have the coke to drink afterwards because he could not pay for it. He is not the only one I have heard of person after person that was treated this way. I give to many organizations but I will not give a dime to the Red Cross. I will give to the Southern Baptist because they are always one of the first groups there…and I will always give to the Salvation Army….and to anything Franklin Graham is involved with ….but not the Red Cross…the founder of the Red Cross would be just sick over what they have become!

You will find that they have Rose colored glasses when they work. There are prejudisms an they do for themselves an there first. There best intentions are already the best thing to do. But they have always gotten away with it. Better be glad it wasn’t me I would have yelled to people come outside we got hot burgers for you. In the love of the Lord I what have done whatever needed to be done. They did help family an friends more then anyone else I’ve seen it myself too many times to count just like food they have people cut in lne when he eldery an baby’s wmom an dad go first. But they get there at the food distrubition centers an if you ain’t the same color as them you might as well wait till they get the people they want in there an there very rude about it. Sorry color blind works toways I hope it’s changed but I don’t it. You see people living in New for tundras an have cars nice then our for sure. If they got that kind money why are they at food line. Not to mention free lnches for kids before now you had to qualify for it. But the kids are wearing name brand shoes an close an cars were totally aw some. Yet they qualify for free lunch. That’s so sad people like about there food stamps man not being in there kids life yet there living n a section 8 home an he’s there every night. I could go on but I I’ll mention one more thing. Useing others ss# an ids an getting gverment assistance. That’s right there for sale to immgrants an being they have teenage girls pg or not they are on the same assistance. I’ve seen it over an over adpgain them saying the man ain’t around but he’s there right under there noss. Try not calling them for a home check with nstead of calling an advising there going to be in there area an do a welfare check. How do you think the parents of foster kids had them for over 20 years locked up in cages. Personally they should be fired for not doing here jobs correctly. Making excuse for why kids are in cages. Give me a break an prostatute having 10 kids on food stamps an gverment housing with hiv an still prostitute ing today. I mean that’s in Galveston right now. Hope no need had sex with her cause she is full blown aids.

I’m Confused? I went to Jamie Mitchell Matuska FB page and read the post below which mentions nothing about the above post but seems to be talking about the same thing. Does this confuse anyone else, or is there something I’m not seeing?

This is what we spent the day doing at the airport – unloading supplies and food flown in to Jack Brooks from Austin, Texas thanks to Dade Phelan and Robin Richards Eissler at Sky Hope Network!! When we arrived at the airport around 6am (evacuee transportation hub) their were masses of buses sitting full of hundreds of people and our supplies were running out fast! Most of the evacuees had slept on the busses. Then our food supply fell through. All it took was ONE phone call by Lindsey Scott to Dade Phelan and ONE phone call by Dade Phelan to Robin Richards Eissler at Sky Hope Network to save the day! Within the hour a plane had landed at Jack Brooks full of much needed toiletries, pillows and food! My mind is blown. Sky Hope flew in half a dozen planes today sending much needed supplies and food under near impossible circumstances. This organization ROCKS! (They fly in supplies on private planes with private pilots in disaster stricken areas.) They were amazing! They even flew in 400 warm hamburgers from Austin Texas for the evacuees!! They also flew in a HUGE C3 full of supplies and food that will benefit not just the evacuees but the whole SETX area! Thank You Dade Phelan and Robin Essiler from Sky Hope! And Thank You to all the volunteers that were patient as we navigated aviation issues and helped us unload these planes! Thank you also to everyone else who answered our pleas and met our needs today! #southeasttexasstrong

I have heard that during the War, Red Cross charged the veterans for coffee, etc. Salvation Army gave free coffee to the veterans. Also, the President of the Red Cross supposedly is paid more than the President of the United States. I do not give to the Red Cross. I give to Salvation Army. When my mother’s home burned many years ago, Red Cross gave her some money. She had to pledge/pay them a day or weeks wages. She lost everything in the fire. Just my thoughts. Thank you for all the volunteers.

I also have seen the dark side of the Red Cross. I lived in an Ohio town, that was demolished in the 1970s, by an F-5 tornado. A church group sent several truck loads of urgently needed supplies, to the town in need. The trucks were stopped at the check point, just outside of town. The Red Cross demanded the supplies be unloaded near the road, to be inspected. After the inspection, they covered over the name of the Church Group, that donated the supplies, with Red Cross Stickers. Then the supplies were loaded onto Red Cross Vans, and taken into the disaster area. The REAL people that made the donations were unknown, to the folks that benefited from their gifts. I refuse to support anyone that operates in this way !!!

I have always heard that the Red Cross was the worse organization to give to because they give so little to the cause. I would not give them a dime. Money sent to Samaritans Purse (Franklin Graham) is the best place to send money. They give the biggest percentage to the need. I trust Mr Graham, I don’t trust the Red Cross. Too much money spent on eating out, shopping and any other way they want to use the monies. Give thru your church or Samaritans Purse. You’ll feel better about giving. Thanks to all that have given of their time and money and the many prayers that have gone out for Texas and Louisiana. Looks like the east coast will be needing prayers too with Irma possibly heading our way. Hope she will fizzle out before landfall.

We have all heard the stories about how the Red Cross charged the soliders for coffee and donuts at the front lines during WW2…..but I was really into your recount of what happened with you and your donations and efforts until you turned it into a liberal bashing….so sad…..you should keep labels out of human interests stories so that your compassion and caring is not overshadowed by your shallow political views….this is not a conservative versus liberal issue…..it is a human versus a business in disguise as a caring group…..keep up the good work…just don’t classify everyone that is not supporting your personal views as somethig you want to label as a dirty word…..ditch the liberal and conservative labels and go with humanitarian…..

Thia is one of the many reasons some disasters locations won’t let the Red Cross into their area. When the Teton Dam broke they sent the Red Cross away because they didn’t want their influence involved there.

Until your last line I was with you all the way! Liberals have nothing to do with the disastrous red cross, The just suck all on their own, don’t set the blame away from them!!! They are not made up of just liberals, or moderates or conservatives, all are represented in the Red cross. The organization has repeatedly proven that they should stick to organizing blood draws only! They won’t earmark moneys for a single need or area! It all goes into a general fund and is distributed to departments and salaries, the remainder is used for services. They are very territorial and can’t handle people just wanting to help on their own. They will not work with volunteer groups that could and would make a bigger difference if they had cooperation from the red cross. Its time the organization was split up and disbanded into smaller non affiliated groups.

I have absolutly no use for the Red Cross. Have you seen the dollar amount the head of it receives in salary.? That’s where your money goes. Way back to WW 2 , I have not trusted them, My uncle was going overseas, just before shipping out Red Cross was there with donuts” having not eaten for hours he asked if he could have a second donut. The reply was ” you get a second one IF you come back” well he did come back after being a POW for several years .Give to oraginazations that put the money where it belongs, to the people in harms way., not to CEO’s

Before you donate to the Red Cross go into their web site and see what they are making salary rise. When I give it will be direct to the people and not to them,Ask them why the domination money never reached the Hurricane Katrina. I have no doubt in my mind the money did not go all or half to them. They will pay one way or the other,

I’ve heard of the Red Cross charging soldiers overseas for things that were donated to them to give to the soldiers. My mother knew a woman that made a sweater for her son and gave it to the Red Cross to give to him. When he got home he showed his mother this nice sweater he bought from the Red Cross. She told him to look in a certain place and he would find his initials, that she had made that for him and given it to the Red Cross to give to him. I have heard other bad stories about the Red Cross so I won’t donate anything to them.

I stopped donating to the Red Cross after 9-11 when they announced they were only going to use part of the money Americans donated for New York City and use the rest for other situations. No, I feel no need to help pay for the nearly 3/4 of a million dollars a year for the CEO. I give my money to Salvation Army now.

    September 5, 2017 at 5:50 am

I’m not sure where/why/how you pulled the liberal label out from this experience. This is simply a case of capitalism and cronyism at work. Red Cross must centralize donations so their value can be tallied for communication up the chain. This then makes it far easier to justify the value of their salaries and future drives. Then, of course, they get the military to follow orders by greasing the wheels of some higher up power in the forces. All for money. And you will find, it nearly always IS about the money when it comes down to things like this that make NO SENSE AT ALL.

So, until We the People start rejecting this absurd notion of money driving everything, then good people like Mrs Scott re going to face the sheer insanity of the system itself, which is only designed to serve the needs of the few. Lets all wake up from the collective delusion and shut these criminal enterprises down. This is not conservatives, liberals, republicans, or democrats – this is the haves vs the have nots, as it always has been.

I wad been told by my Mother that she saw the Red Cross as far back as WWII charging for donuts and coffee. She had seen the Red Cross on many occasions turn away people in need and give to some who weren’t as needy. They horded supplies in their warehouses instead of distributing them to those who needed them. I have not trusted the Red Cross since hearing these horror stories from my Mother and even my Father. I think they are just looking out for themselves and seeking accolades for doing what they should be doing anyway.

Sometimes when someone gets a little authority, it goes to their head. I hope they will be dealt with and not allowed to be leaders in the future. I certainly hope many people witnessed this rude display and the word spreads. Other organizations will love to have the donations and put it to better use. Maybe smaller organizations, where a power play doesn’t exist, would be a better place for the public to place their donations. What a shame when someone puts their need to look important over the people in need!

A pastor had told me many years ago that he would never donate any money to the red. Ross again. He had a man who had lost everything in a tornado, but Red Cross said he would have to go through the channels before they could help him in any way. Needless to say this pastor gave them a good Ole southern talking to a n d took the gentleman elsewhere. You will find that most of the money donated to Red Cross stays at Red Cross and very little goes to the people who need it. Give to local community charities if you want it to go where it’s needed. The Salvation Army is another great charity.

That sounds about right for the NON American Red Cross. Scumbag organization of the US. They will take you money, food, clothing and send it where ever they feel like. Maybe. Just like the Hundreds of Millions of Dollars they received for the Haiti Victims. That received NOTHING of the money, at least only a pittance of what was donated for THEM. The American Red Cross only thinks about themselves and SCREW where the money is supposed to go. Most of it is Hidden and NEVER reaches the people that need it. They are the LOWEST OF The LOW when it comes to Aid Groups.

I learned about the American Red Cross during the 2nd World War, when we were doing Bundles for Britain and trying to locate my brother, who was in the Major Battle of the Bulge in the Artillery Division. I went to one of their storage centers and they were burning baby clothes, diapers, etc.,rather than distribute them locally to the needy. They were destroying boxes of “Bundles for Britain” for whatever reason. They charged my mother quite a few dollars to try and locate my brother, they never did. So Mom went to the Salvation Army. No fees, but they found him in just two weeks, so we could send food and supplies to him. Later, when he return home from the war, he told us a number of horror stories about the Red Cross. He said it was always, the Salvation Army that was up there near the front lines helping the soldiers, not the Red Cross. I have never contributed to them since then, but always to the Salvation Army, to this day. You rarely ever hear anything about the work they do, they don’t seek notoriety or photo-op pictures to be published. They just quietly go about doing their good work.

This is….outrageous at best & inhuman at worst. But DO NOT blame’liberals’ for the Red Crosses’ actions & decisions in this case! The Red Cross tends to think they own crisis response * management, fundamentally because they’re a G.O., ‘government (sponsored) organization’. They’ve done the same awful things during the crisis in Haiti when people were sending thousands of cases of water, which the Red Cross refused to distribute, because they were from ‘NGO’s’ aka non-governmental organizations. Yes, they were directly from everyday people like us, who cared about other humans suffering & were trying to help. It’s waste, fraud, petty power playing, politics & cruelty at it’s finest right there- denying shoes, non-perishable food, potable water, clothing, blankets etc because it did not go through THEM.

I’ve seen this post on FB, but I would like further verification. Do you just repeat things or do you actually verify before reporting? Is this news or fake news????

The article leaves out pieces of information that a normal person would ask. Are we really talking about warm hamburgers or are we talking about shoes or other “supplies”? Were the people who showed up with all this stuff doing their own thing, or trying to get the Red Cross to use their donations right then and there? If so, I understand it may “seem” logical, but it isn’t that simple when you are a nonprofit and especially when government funding is involved. If these people wanted to show up and help, they should have simply planned to help, not “use” the Red Cross to do work for them. Likewise, the Red Cross shouldn’t have prevented them from helping, and I have a hard time imagining that they would have unless these folks were expecting the Red Cross to take their donations and use it right then and there. That’s not how it works… Again, I say, if they wanted to donate hamburgers, shoes, whatever–great, but you are either donating to the Red Cross or not. If you are, then you have to give it to them to do as they will. If NOT, then you need to be prepared (and manned) to distribute those things yourself. If this group was prepared to do so, and the Red Cross was trying to PREVENT them from distributing things, that is an entirely different story. AND the story should be told accordingly… completely… and truthfully.

Hence fourth I’m not down to donating it idiots.People are finally seeing the seriousness of the fact that Obama and Hitlery were INTENT ON DESTROYING AMERICA. The entire administration needs to be gone too. Obama purchased 1.6 Billion of our tax dollars for ammunition, He has or had a order put out for 250 Million Americans to be killed by 2016’s end – however None of them thought Trump would win. I have yet to hear that this order was cancelled. With over 800 FEMA DEATH CAMPS, 264 WALMART STORES CONVERTED INTO ADDITIONAL DEATH CAMPS, 40 MILLION COFFINS, 300 GAS CHAMBERS, 30 THOUSAND GUILLOTINES, 2200+ MOSQUES LOCKED AND LOADED – THANKS TO OBAMA AND HITLERY, OVER 8000 NO GO ZONES, PLUS HOMES THAT – NO DOUBT ORIGINAL OWNERS ARE DEAD. ALL LOCKED AND LOADED. 50+ ISIS TRAINING COMPOUNDS, UNDER GROUND TUNNELS SOUTH OF CALIFORNIA WHERE ISIS HAS BEEN SMUGGLING IN WEAPONS. THEY WANT TOTAL GENOCIDE OF ALL AMERICANS AND THE REST OF THE WESTERN WORLD.
“The goal of Islam is to dominate while the non-Muslims live in an underclass” (Quran 9:29), while they are “forced to submit by any means necessary, including death” (Quran 8:39).
We must rise together and speak up. We must never stop fighting Islam and rejecting it in our country. As history has proven: “If you give Islam an inch, they will take over your nation.”
FEMA DEATH CAMPS are Activated and they have already done some test areas to kick down doors and grab guns. Our Leaders – are on Target to make this a One World Government. We are looking at LIFE or DEATH.

I was not surprised to read your story about your attempt to get between THE RED CROSS AND MONEY! people don’t realize that they are a FOR PROFIT business, because before the poor people who survive a disaster can get help, they have to pay 6 figure salaries to their CEO’s ! the poor folks left homeless, get what’s left! I have stories to tell too! but for now I just SAY “NO”when the grocery clerk asks me if I want to donate to the REDCROSS, and get a funny look for it! now if they said, “will you donate to the HOUSTON PEOPLE, we are sending a truck load of food?”, that would be different.! pass the word! and do NOT pay any attention to the t.v. ads for THE REDCROSS telling you to send ONLY CASH (have you noticed?) hmmmm, think about it folks!

This is why we must ALL CALL OUT THE DESPICABLE RED CROSS. As a Liberal, with a capital L, I RARELY agree, with the Conservative Media, but Conservative Media, please spread how much the Red Cross’s overhead is, compared with how little they actually spend on people they are supposed to be helping, at the EXPENSE OF THE NEEDY, AND THOSE WHO HAVE GENEROUSLY GIVEN TO THIS HORRIBLE ORGANIZATION. After, the hurricane that hit, Haiti, they received 5 BILLION DOLLARS from telethons, and other generous individuals because the RC, ‘promised’ they would build housing for Haitians. THEY BUILD, A TOTAL OF FIVE HOUSES… THAT’S IT! They are the billion dollar bully, and people fall for it.. STOP GIVING TO THE RED CROSS… THEY ARE A BUNCH OF CRIMINALS

Thank you for you candid articl. I feel very much the same as you do…I am against big business such as Walmart collecting funds from every person who makes a purchase so they can go on tv and talk about the large donations they give. The Red Cross is a fraudulent organization and always has been. They slowly dole out the provisions AS THEY SEE FIT to make a horrible tragedy seem and be WAY worse than it needs to be. That way they can brag about all the help they gave when it was such a tragic situation. They can take photos of ALL they do and put them in commercials to help raise more and more money for their coffers and pay the higher ups more and more money.

Lindsey Scott I completely agree with every word you have said.
It makes me so angry that some of these charities, CEO’S make the kind of money they make….yet they are always asking for donations but cannot answer one simple question! HOW MUCH HAS THE RED CROSS BROUGHT IN. GREED is so important to some.

Going through a national disaster, flood myself in 2007 I have said time and time again Red cross left us all. Salvation Army was a god send. They provided a store with all donations, gave families a little cash, stayed for months. Red cross promised food left less than two weeks. Local people put on a fund raiser none of us seen a dime of. Now I’m talking about a town of 4000 here not a city. Red Cross was in charge of it….If you donate please Salvation Army is the real deal.

During WW11 it sounds like they were like that also. My mom knitted items for the soldiers, being new knitter she did have a few mistakes perling instead of knitting. The Red Cross would NOT ACCEPT them because they were not perfect. They could have kept many soldiers very comfortable. My mom never forgot that and would never donate to their cause. By the way, She kept a pare. Beautiful with ONE Row of perling.

First off how the hell did one woman make 400 burgers???? Also, how did she keep them all warm?
MOre importantly, how did she keep them from going bad while making all those burgers?

If the article and post in the article is true, the Red Cross was absolutely correct in stopping this woman. The last thing they want to deal with are hundreds of storm refugees getting diarrhea and suing them for allowing them to eat tainted food.

There are WAAAY too many wanna-be good samaritans who do not think before they act. If they want to help, they need to coordinate and work with those in charge of relief efforts instead of barging in and acting like they are heroes coming to rescue everyone.
For example in the last few days, law enforcement has been telling people to go home with their boats as they were simply not needed anymore in Houston and they just had TOO many volunteers. This pissed off A LOT of people. The fact of the matter however is that you can have too much of a good thing. If people want to donate food, again, they need to work with the Red Cross coordinators on the ground. Otherwise they will only become an unnecessary distraction and aggravation.

BTW… I understand what the Red Cross is dealing with because in the Army, where I was an NCO in the Corp of Engineers, I dealt with field logistics very similar to what they are dealing with in terms of getting food and water (in edible condition) to large numbers of people out in the field. It’s a massive undertaking that can be very complex. So someone showing up with 400 burgers in questionable condition (and not even in a cooler apparently) is just absolutely insane.

So, Way to go, Lindsey! Your rant was shared from your sister’s FB page 75,000 times with over 60K likes. It was shared dozens of times by various news outlets. All because you had a bad experience with two people volunteering for the American Red Cross, hundreds of thousands of people will probably stop donating. Many untold thousands will suffer for your rant. The ARC serves thousands of disasters with great efficiency and accuracy. But that won’t matter. Because of your self-serving story, that broad brush of public disdain will do unimaginable harm. Well done. I know that there must be dozens more stories like yours…. and thousands of stories where the Red Cross has done great things.

You had me until you made the “liberal” comment. Made me wonder where your “humanity” was. The comment was totally unwarranted as we “liberals” are not fond of The Red Cross.
Tell me this: did you ask if the survivors were “Liberal” or “Conservative” or something else? This whole effort has nothing to with politics – just neighbors.
I comment you for your efforts. I deplore your labeling.

This is why I never donate to the Red Cross. When I was a child, I remember my uncle, a sailor in the second world war, saying that the Red Cross was of no help to them during the war overseas or at home. He gave full credit to the Salvation Army and the USO.

Same thing happened in the 1996 floods in Oregon and Washington. Red Cross showed up and served either a bologna or cheese sandwich (both dry) and a bottle of water. I will give it that if you had nothing else it would work but come on, these people were hurting and needed a little more. A least add a cookie or candy bar. The community got together and put together sandwich makings, donuts, fruit, coffee and tea. Really disappointed it what Red Cross offered in help

I will not be volunteering for, nor with, the RED CROSS. I have not been supporting them for years, after I found out that money collected for emergencies was ending up in the well padded wallets of the Directors. This organization used to be admired but now they are just another user of victims. What this man/wife team did is inconceivable to me. HOW DARE THEY! People were hungry and the AMERICAN RED CROSS took food OUT OF THEIR MOUTHS, Jeez. Local volunteers chastised for seeing to the needs of their own and the AMERICAN RED CROSS admonishes them, no way. This is so wrong.

The action by the Red Cross is one of the reasons that I will never donate any money to them. I heard many stories of how they charged our military for coffee and doughnuts during WWII, and I did not see a reason to not believe those war torn veterans. If you look at how the RED CROSS distributes money you will see where the greatest portions go and its not to help people. From a personal experience While in the military I needed to borrow money to get from my home after attending my brothers funeral to get back to the Air Base in NJ to catch my flight back to England. The local chapter told me I did not qualify for a loan. Since that day I have never given to the Red Cross. I have heard stories where they have done some good but they are few and far between.

The Red Cross needs to work in conjunction with local community to provide the needed services/food, shelter, clothing, etc., not ostracize and berate those people who donate their time, money and services to help and would appreciate the Red Cross HELPING, not hindering the effort.

they gave us (family of six), a box of donuts, and some money which they took out of my Dads
pay check afterwards…. So nothing they do surprises me!!!

You know I think what you beautiful people did was really awesome. The red cross not so good. I also want to say this is not a competition, it is about giving with our hearts. God did take notice and these red cross volunteers need to take a check up from the neck up.. I love you guys and you are very much appreciated.. You know there are going to be new volunteers every day.. So everyone should be welcomed. God bless you all..

Red Cross is very evil. When Donald Trump was handing out their food in styrofoam dishes the other day, which of course Red Cross had spent donations to have their names plastered on them all), I heard our President ask himself what was inside and when he opened it up to look my jaw dropped as low as his. A bag of potato chips and whatnot that would even give nourishment to a child. E said nothing but I said plenty for him. Red Cross gives themselves plenty of that money and bonuses/. I only use Salvation Army, as they are true. I just loaded two big boxes of canned foods and will be picking up lots from my Bible Study Class tomorrow, Wednesday, pf foods and clothing. and will deliver all to Salvation Army in Fort Pierce for Harvey victims. They will truly distribute it to them with their blessings or feed it to them. God Bless Texas and Salvation Army.

I am stunned and very disappointed. This goes towards confirming what I’ve read/heard more than once about the Red Cross. I know if you look at their accounting you will discover how much money is used for overhead (salaries, etc.) and how much goes to causes.

This may have changed because my reference is to something posted a couple years ago – but I doubt it. Let’s hear it for The Salvation Army. Just check out their budget. The “man in charge” takes a tiny salary.

    September 5, 2017 at 3:11 pm

The RED CROSS has always been known for doing things like this. My brother-in-law was in World War 2 and he always said he would not donate to the Red Cross. He was wounded and remained crippled the rest of his life. He said the Red Cross would come and set up but they would charge the service men for even a cup of coffee. Also their CEO gets a huge salary. I will donate to the Salvation Army but not the Red Cross.

Some agencies like the Red Cross seem to think they “own” the crisis and all involved! ALL who would help are welcomed! Red Cross, get your act together, and cooperate with others who would join the team to help hurting people, or helping!

I salute the kind people of Texas, especially Lindsey Scott and her team, who went out of their way to bring much needed relief to the suffering victims of Hurricane Harvey! I doubly applaud them for taking that unnecessary abuse from the Red Cross, and for taking a stand against evil-for that is what the Red Cross represented — pure evil. Shame on you, Red Cross of America, for your inhumanity, pride and greed!

  379. Billie McClune

    September 5, 2017 at 3:31 pm

The Red Cross is not my favorite organization as they do not step up to the plate with more compassion and love for there fellow human beings. The Salvation Army are the ones who never look down at those in need. They have always been a wonderful organization dedicated to helping all the people every day. What the Red Cross did here was spiteful and completely hateful. They have got to big for there britches and have forgot who they are helping by the generous donations of all America.

  380. Anita G Smith

    September 5, 2017 at 3:35 pm

I have heard this before after other disasters.. I would not give the Red cross a dime. When my husband returned from Korea back in the 50s the RC offered the soldiers a stale doughnut and lukewarm coffee as they stepped off the ship—then wanted them to pay $2.00 for it.

  381. Wanda

    September 5, 2017 at 3:39 pm

This is why I do not donate through the Red Cross. They are as crooked as a dogs hind leg. Greedy people. I’ve had dealings with them over the years and will NOT give time or money to them. Go directly to the people, go to the Texans!!!!! I’m from Kentucky and I support whatever Texas is doing to help flood victims.

  382. Eva

    September 5, 2017 at 3:42 pm

This is the reason we give to the Salvation Army. During WWII, my husbands uncle that served said the Red Cross made the service boys pay for their cup of coffee but the Salvation Army gave the service men a cup of coffee free. Also, the Red Cross pay their CEO around a million in salary where the Salvation Army CEO makes 45,000. So the donations to Salvation Army goes to the people and not the administration. The Salvation Army are generally one of the first to be there and the last to leave. I am sure there are other good organizations and church’s, but The Red Cross has never been one to our knowledge.

I give to many causes but I NEVER GIVE TO THE RED CROSS – Some of my family served in the second world war and the RED CROSS charge the men on the battle fields for the coffee and donuts they bought to them — SHAME ON THEM !!!! Years later I went to the RED CROSS for help and was told they only help people in the service — Wouldn’t give them a PENNY

    September 5, 2017 at 3:58 pm

this is a horrible thing to hear . I know the people depend on red cross to help aid these people with all donations. their’s people starving that are down their working as well. why do we continue to tell everyone to give to the ORG.? DONATE TO SOME REAL LEADERSHIP GROUP’S OR MAKE OR OWN. WE NEED ONE THAT IS A BACK UP PLAN ANYWAYS. THE NEXT BIG DISASTER IS AROUND THE CORNER AND WE AS A NATION CAN DO ANYTHING!! GOD BLESS AND I WISH Y’ALL THE BEST. YOU CERTAINLY DESERVE IT.!

Nothing surprises me about this after my late husband, who fought in the Korean War told me this. The Red Cross offered, after he had been in a foxhole for 8 days with 3 other guys, to sell them a stale donut Of course they had no money, so the Salvation Army saw what was happening and rushed over to give them as much food as they wanted. I never gave another cent to The Red Cross. I do contribute to The Salvation regularly.

  387. Robert

    September 5, 2017 at 4:03 pm

I hear so many stories like this, it is a real shame. The worse part is the lining of the pockets of the organization leaders. They take millions from the donations to line their own pockets. Less than .10 of every $ donated gets to the needy.

The American Red Cross is run by Republicans, not liberals; and only 8 cents out of every dollar donated to them for hurricane relief makes it to those needing relief. Their CEO makes an annual salary of $1,000,030.00. Yes, over 1 million dollars. For comparison, the CEO of The Salvation Army receives an annual salary of $13,000.00 , and 93 cents out of every dollar raised goes to their various programs that help people. Think about that when you donate your time and/or money.

I would like to point out that saying “ran by liberals” is a very general statement. I may be liberal (not sure really) and I do what’s right. Feeding those people would be my top priority. Let’s leave out the politics and just say what it is, a “semi-crooked society”.

  391. Elizabeth

I have heard similar stories about the Red Cross. I refuse to give any money to them. The Salvation Army seems to do good for the people. If There is a family I know and they need help I will send the money directly to them not to the RED CROSS.

    September 5, 2017 at 4:38 pm

We donate quite a bit to specific people and families and that is how we like to do our donations. nothing against Red Cross or other similar agencies, but lets face it, all these organizations have administrative, support and direct staff, all of whom have to be paid……and why not? Its their job! Good for them that they have chosen a career like this !!

  394. Judy Hynum

    September 5, 2017 at 4:40 pm

I have heard many times about how the Red Cross does not allow others to help… and that not all the donations go to the specific needs. That is why I DO NOT donate to the Red Cross. My donations go where I know they will be used properly. I am so sorry for this particular incident, especially when there are so many urgent needs in Texas. Prayers for all.

Good to know article. Wish you had not made it a partisan thing. All liberals are not bad so why blame all the things bad people do as being liberal. This is not because the Red Cross is liberal it is because some people are just bad.

  396. Amanda

My family flooded with TS Allison. We lost everything! We managed to hitch a ride to one of their service centers to ask for help. They separated my husband and I and questioned us. We were informed they would have to “verify” our loss. We were sent away with NOTHING, not even a bottle of water. Other people were leaving with vouchers, cases of water, etc. I sat in a gutted house with no electricity in Texas heat for a week with my two children under 4 waiting for them to “verify” my loss. I called every day and was told the same thing…they would be there later today. They never came. They never helped. It was our church, family and friends that helped get us back on our feet. There are better charities out there, donate to one of them. I wont give a dime to Red Cross.

Glad the people around you stood up to that couple. Sure they knew how tired you were as they were in your position too after all that had happened. Please report that couple to Red Cross as they SHOULD reprimand them and make sure their volunteers know how they ‘should be’ treating people helping out in these horrible times.

  398. Carlos

    September 5, 2017 at 5:03 pm

Typical of large organizations, they create turf wars that have no place in times of disaster. While I have seen them do some great things during emergencies that I was involved in while I was still wearing a badge; I have seen them muscle out local organizations.

This is especially true with blood donations. I personally refuse to donate to any American Red Cross blood donation efforts because they will outright lie to donors if asked whether or not their donations will be used in the local area. The ARC’s definition of “local” can encompass up to 48 of our States.

Kudos tot he lady and her community for stepping up and delivering the goods where it should be delivered despite the ARC’s bullying!!

All was good until “ran by liberals”. Now the Red Cross is liberal? Because they were a-holes? C’mon.
Good for you though. You did an amazing, beautiful, necessary, and wonderful thing. A true act of loving kindness.
But please don’t politicize what happened. It’s just not necessary.
    God bless.

    September 5, 2017 at 5:31 pm

This is atrocious behavior! I am slow to judge entire groups any more, so I will say this couple at the least mishandled the entire situation. In any emergency, people should take care of their own first, and any organization coming in needs to coordinate WITH THE LOCAL ORGANIZATION whenever there is one. Sure, they may have been thinking of survival and the future, while local helpers are instead thinking of continuous coverage, but they did not need to insult and they needed to ask and see what the locals were already doing. They needed to, once they saw a local organization handling the situation, ask how they could best be of service. By the way, I am generally characterized as a liberal, but there are so many misinterpretations, as I see it as caring about people in general and offering opportunity for people to become their best. I would interpret your actions as being liberal and socially sensitive to people’s needs. I try to look at people rather than labels, which dynamically change their meaning over time.

  401. Gerald Buck

The Red Cross is possibly one of the worst organizations in the world. They help no one and raid the kitty for their own benefit. I wouldn’t give them the sweat off my backside if they were dying of thirst.
I dealt with them when in the service in the late sixties, I’d heard all the horror stories from my dad and uncles about them. When I was in, I learned they were true.

  402. Bobbie Overstreet

    September 5, 2017 at 5:51 pm

I learned what the Red Cross was all about years ago when I did research. I have never donated one cent to them since. Look at how little out of each dollar goes to the actual cause. You can count on The Salvation Army to be there serving and every cent you give them during this crises goes to help. Research for yourself and don’t take my word.

  403. William DeBord

    September 5, 2017 at 5:54 pm

Do what you want to do. They do not have any authority anywhere. I will never support the REd Cross. Their CEO makes over $600,000 a year in wages and a small percentage of donations go to the real need. They are losers. GIVE TO THE SALVATION ARMY THEY GIVE IT ALL TO THE NEED.

  404. Mary

    September 5, 2017 at 6:02 pm

I do not give to red cross they use disasters to make money. They then use it for whatever they think is best –not what you want to do. They are also top heavy. I searched for an organization that would give me a choice– specify where I wanted my moneys used or give them the choice of where it is most needed. I also wanted an organization that was not top heavy with ‘suits’ being paid more than was given out. I decided on Samaritan’s Purse. We give regularly to them. They give 80% of what is donated to those in need. The 20 left is used to pay staff and other expenses. This is one of the least amounts a charity takes for business expenses. I would also check out Salvation Army. Red Cross has been busy ruining their reputation for quite a while.

I always thought the Red Cross was grossly over rated. I think something like 85% of the money taken in by them goes to the administration of the organization. That means that only 15 cents out of every dollar donated actually reaches those in need…..

  408. Donna Chambers

    September 5, 2017 at 6:18 pm

I am glad you posted this experience. I will never donate to the Red Cross again. I know from experience with our own hurricanes that the Red Cross does not give everything that was donated to them to the people who need it. This is true of a lot of “charities”. I give to the ones who don’t take their cut before giving to those in need!

I’m crying with anger. The Red Cross, has so much to answer for. This story does not surprise the thousands and thousands of us, here in Rockaway Beach, NYC. (a thin strip of populated, ocean beach community, that is actually only a isolated sand bar) The Red Cross had rec. millions upon millions in donations, for Sandy Disaster relief to help us, 5 years ago, when were nearly wiped off the map. THEY DID LITTLE TO NOTHING TO HELP US. And I can also attest to at least one of their non-local-volunteers,being a condesending twerp.

Samaritan’s Purse is who I donate through! I’m not them, so I couldn’t swear to it, but I ALWAYS hear that the donations actually go to the cause and NOT to the highly paid leaders of the organization like The Red Cross does! These are the people who also do the Operation Christmas Child at Christmas, collecting shoe box size boxes of gifts for children all over the world. I am a liberal and an ICU nurse. This behavior had nothing to do with their liberal or conservative philosophies. I find the lack of respect and common sense of the Red Cross appalling. The Red Cross is not ran by working class liberals, they are ran by a bunch of crooks that masquerade as humanitarians, but fill their pockets out of other’s loss. Shame on them. What can we here in California do to help your community? Give me a contact and I will start working from this end. Sincerely, Kimberly Harmon, BSN, RN, CCRN, WCC

This is disgusting to say the least…but I for one will never contribute funds through The RED CROSS ever again. For years, we gave monies by way of RED CROSS because we felt it wouldnt line some jerks pocket, but stopped when we found out that only 2% was all those in need received from our measly $20 bucks. We felt bad that we could only afford to give $20. Then others showed us about the greediness of our great American RED CROSS!!!…gag, reminds me of the days that our jobs insisted we give to “United Fund” just to show our employers employees gave 100% making them look good. Another gag reflect. Never again! We give personal checks now or cash to the needy. Have you ever helped in a POUNDING? When a family is hungry, buy essentials in 1 pound amounts and take to their home, ring the doorbell and leave quickly,(so no one knows where those bags of food came from!) Best feeling in the world to see little children so happy to have food and treats with a note sent…. ” This is from the Lord. Enjoy!” Better still is to be down and out due to unforseen circumstances and have this expression of 💗 dropped on your doorstep or porch just when you think your prayers have not been answered. A pound of Coffee, Butter, Sugar, Bread, Peanut Butter etc. will help get you back on track. PTL!!

This is despicable. Do communities even have to let Red Cross in if they are able to take care of themselves (probably so under some asinine government regulation). I love the Texas spirit and if the Red Cross is getting in the way rather than giving all, they should just leave.

wow, i was totally on your side and about to share on my social network, so people would know to donate to your local organizations, rather than the red cross, until you slur at the end that the red cross are corrupt liberals… you equate that behavior with a political party? do you ask people before you give them a hamburger if they are liberal or conservative? you ruined an otherwise powerful, helpful article pointing out an injustice — by equating liberalism with corruption! that’s as bad as all liberals who think all conservatives are corrupt. do your homework; there are plenty of articles about left wingers who decry the red cross. you do an injustice to the truth of this article with your prejudiced, misinformed slap to good people everywhere, of all persuasions and political affiliations, most of whom are trying to cut through the crap of this kind of prejudice to understand one another, not just make stuff up (which, by the way, are not “alternative facts” – they’re actually lies). sorry i’m so worked up, but your comments were so unexpected and so utterly ruinous at a time like this.

  431. Gloria Meyer

    September 5, 2017 at 8:34 pm

I have enjoyed reading the comments you have made about the Red Cross but I am very sorry to say that I made a sizable donation to them! It said it would be a one-time donation and that is the first time I have ever donated to them because I have heard other stories about them. God bless you for what y’all are doing and I just hope and pray that what I sent will be used for the needy from Hurricane Harvey. That is all I can hope for and I will never give another cent to them, this I can promise. There are other good charities around that do wonderful work.

Okay so why was the RED CROSS involved in your organization delivery or interrupting your distribution of goods and services? They don’t do local distribution well that is fine but you weren’t a red cross delivery were you? You weren’t making a donation to the red cross. They assumed you were private citizens trying to deliver food and goods to be donated to red cross. You needed only explain you were members of an organization similar to the red cross but operating under the rules of that group and not making any donations to red cross. Once that is established you could tell them you will accept their help with manpower to do your mission but within your organizations rules and or to stay out of the way of your operation.

  436. Janice Field

    September 5, 2017 at 9:43 pm

I despise the Red Cross. They are on my list of organizations not to contribute to. The reason they did not want this woman to distribute her food is because they could not take credit for it, and it made them look bad. They are all about image. If you look closely at this organization you will find that many of their top officials live in Multi Million Dollar houses funded in part by the donations they receive for helping out in disasters. any organization that complains with others chip in to help and acts the way the did is questionable in my book. I want to contribute to Texas, but will NOT donate money to the crooked Red Cross.

The Red Cross is another organization that I would never donate anything to. They are greedy for donations but do not always dole them out. They also will send bills to people that they help. I’ve had personal experience with this. My grandmother received help from them but died in the hospital and my mother got a bill from them for their “services”.

The Red Cross was absolutely wrong. Any person who goes out of their way to help feed those in any devistated place should be allowed to help those who are hungry or those who just arrived at a center for help. How dare the Red Cross berate anyone who tries to help. These Red Cross people need to be let go for the abuse they put that helpful woman thru. Especially in front of others. Disgusting.

I also had a bad experience with the Red Cross. This story does not surprise me. A whole block burned down in Indianapolis and my house was included. I called the Red Cross for help and was told “We only help in disasters” and I replied “What do you call this?” and No Answer from them. We needed everything, toothpaste, underwear, soap, food, showers,a place to sleep for a couple of nights, I also had 3 kids who had to go to shcool the next day. So anyway we made it through but I will never forget the “NO HELP” from the Red Cross.

I’m so very sorry you, and the rest of the volunteers, were treated like that. That was soooo wrong and I pray that the behavior of the two Red Cross volunteers is not representative of the rest of the organization. May the Lord bless you for your compassionate heart in serving your devastated communities. I appreciate you writing this article but I was turned off by your second-to-last sentence “This goes to show that we do, indeed, live a semi-crooked society, ran by liberals.” Why bring politics into this? Do you know for sure that the Red Cross is run by liberals? How does the R.C. volunteers behavior indicate being a “liberal”? So are you saying that only a liberal would act that way? That is an overreaching, very wrong, assumption. There are ALL types of people, regardless of their beliefs, race, or gender that do, say, and think things that are wrong. But there are also ALL types of people, regardless of their beliefs, race, or gender that do, say, and think things that are kind, compassionate, heroic, uplifting, and selfless.

Why do you feel the need to berate Liberals in your article? I am a Liberal and I am proud because I believe in treating every member of our country with the respect and dignity I would like to receive myself. I volunteer at my church; I volunteer at nursing homes. I am a good, kind person and do not judge others by their political views. I may not agree with you, but you are entitled to your say as am I. Peace!

I feel sad about this incident with the Red Cross but not surprised. Over the years, through many catastrophic events I have heard many similar reports. The RC is top heavy with management who command very high salaries possibly because they are well connected and attract big donations from their contacts in society, government, show business, business etc. The RC also needs the support of the “common people” therefore it needs to continuously project a very positive image in terms of responsiveness and effective results. They feel compelled to take complete ownership of situations so their image and mandate will prevail.

    It really is dirty work.

in the 50’s red cross brought my cousin home from Germany as his grandmother had dies & 3 months later his dad got a bill from red cross for $10,000.00 for cost of flight. so they have been doing this kind of crap for @ least 70 years so i’m not alarmed about that @ all that is why I don’t give to red cross.

That is exactly why I donate to the Salvation Army instead of the Red Cross. My uncle, who fought in World War II, told me never to donate to the Red Cross, but donate instead to the Salvation Army. He said the Red Cross charged them for everything they got from them, including cigarettes, while the Salvation Army crawled as close to the front lines as possible, bringing hot coffee and donuts hung around their necks, for the soldiers, and everything they brought was free! I had just mailed my check today to the Salvation Army to help the flood victims, and then I came across this..Darn shame!

I am sorry to say that I have nothing good to say about the Red Cross. Picture it, WW11. My uncle Bill Bruggeman, serving as a paratrooper in our Army jumped right behind the front lines to do whatever had to be done. He was approached by a member of the Red Cross who offered him hot coffee and donuts……for a price. When you are fighting a war, you just don’t think to bring money with you in case the Red Cross should show up.

Samaritans Purse is an outstanding organization with whom you can donate financially and with your time. Charity Navigator rates Samaritans Purse an A+ (four stars out of four). They are outstanding in their Disaster Relief. You can find Samaritans Purse Disaster Relief at http://www.samaritanspurse.org .

I’ve volunteered with them in the past and am most impressed with their ethics. My family made a donation for Harvey as well.

They don’t use all aid they receive. They take a percentage for themselves. This woman with a good heart should have been applauded by the red cross for doing all she could to help out. They obviously are only serving one meal every 24 hours. Thank you ma’am for all you have done and don’t let them discourage you to keep helping people in need.

OK, I was with you until the last comment. We are Progressives and we do NOT condone how the Red Cross works. They are not liberals, they are establishment oriented. I will never donate to them. They use most of the donations for Administrative costs and in times of war and disaster, they actually bill those they help for what they have done. It is despicable to say the least. I know all those you helped were grateful and we are grateful for all that you have done.

I remember a Flood back in the Fifties, in West Terre Haute, In. People were Sand Bagging, moving folks with boats, and stacking up furniture. The salvation Army was ‘Giving’ hot coffee, hot Cocoa, and snacks, while at the same time, ‘The RED CROSS WAS SELLING COFFEE & DONUTS! I will never give a dime to the Red Cross, oh, and check out what their C E O’s get paid!

The Red Cross did pretty much the exact same thing in Louisiana last year. Our local community was feeding flood victims and gathering donations for people themselves. Then DAYS later here comes the Red Cross to poop in everyone’s cereal. They refused to let people hand out food that did not come from them directly. It was infuriating and wrong. I don’t understand how they are allowed to act this way. DON’T DONATE ANYTHING OTHER THAN BLOOD TO THE RED CROSS.

While I understand this is a conservative site, the liberal remark is far beyond uncalled for. The Red Cross has been doing stuff like this for MANY years, as I know they have been since 2001. They love it when tragedy strikes because of the money that rolls in. It cannot be said that it’s a “liberal” problem. Conservatives can be just as guilty.

What? The Red Cross is a bunch of LIBERALS? What a ridiculous presumption. The Red Cross is a bunch of people … just as your helping crew were.

I agree with your frustration and anger. The notion that the Red Cross even should have had a VOICE in what to do with the food you brought is just WRONG, and someone should have been lambasted for that.

But you destroy your entire story by accusing them of being Liberals. It sounds like you’re a bunch of Ku Klux Klan members.

I have heard stories like this from my husband he served during the Korean war they went to Grease to help earth Quake victims the red. Cross helped him and other members on the ship he served on they were given blankets and doughnuts only to find out later they had to pay for what they received.Since he knew for a fact that this happened I have never really felt good about donating to the Red Cross Over s period of years I set up Blood Drives through our church and I often wondered if they charged anyone for the Blood. So the story you shared about Harvey
I had to believe everything you said It is so sad that people act like

What does this HORRIBLE behavior perpetrated by the Red Cross have to do with liberals? Your article ends with the comment: “This goes to show that we do, indeed, live a semi-crooked society, ran by liberals.” I realize this is labeled “Conservative Media,” but why bring liberals versus conservatives into the mix when berating the behavior of Red Cross workers? Besides that, I’m guessing our society is “run” by the government, which currently has a Republican president and a Republican-led congress. And kudos to this fine woman for her caring, giving heart!!

The Red Cross, is not the most honest place that you can donate to. They wanted to prevent the burgers from being distributed because ??????? Red Cross is something else. I knew a guy that volunteered with them. He put many hours into rewiring and cleaning an equipment room over months of time. Then they told him that they hadn’t been planning to use the building anymore for a long time… The paid workers don’t like volunteers sometimes. I’m sure that money donated to the 700 club is used a lot better

If your group of good samaritans were volunteering their time and giving from their own resources to provide for the present needs of those you’ve mentioned, then I, with a few capable friends would have (kindly, or forcefully) escorted this pair from the premises, regardless of their official status with the Red Cross, and then continued with my labor of love. Romans 8:31 is precedent enough for me. These people were not representatives of any authority that God has ordained.

America should WAKE UP. This not the first time the Red cross has behaved like this. I stopped giving to them a long time ago. They are mis-managed, poorly staffed with untrained people, and far more of your dollar donations goes to management and the higher ups than is acceptable. They are a terrible choice for your charity donations. Much better to find smaller, (local to the disaster) organizations that you KNOW are honest and really care about the victims.

Your comments about the Red Cross are not new. I wish the president could DO SOMETHINGS about their behavior. The Red Cross’s BAD actions were experienced in the same manner as you described last year in Baton Rouge & Lafayette., Louisiana. They act like they own everything as soon as they arrive & do not allow praying with people or people who want to come in & do so with the victims. WHO DO THEY THINK THEY ARE? GOD, maybe. They need to be put in their PROPER PLACE. So sorry you ran into their dictatorship. You’d think they’re giving their own personal money to this disaster. I do pray that President Trump or anyone else does NOT go through them with their donations. THEY NEED TO BE STOPPED. I heard they threw away LOTS of GOOD FOOD & DONATIONS, just because people let them handle things.
I am SICK to my stomach just writing & thinking about it. They are an abomination!

  491. Michael Olson

The US Red Cross has many dedicated individuals in the local bottom tiers, but the organization and its management is rigidly hierarchical, inflexible, disorganized, and not worth the support it gets. My wife trained and volunteered locally, then went to NJ for 9/11. She was appalled at how completely incompetent the management was and how little they were able to actually help.

Such a heart-warming story about the kindness you showed those in need. However, in the end, you berated liberals? I am a liberal and I would never have tried to stop those in need of sustenance from getting food. What on earth did you have to ruin a beautiful story of help and compassion by suggesting liberals were crooks here? I am very grateful for your generosity and kindness to our precious human family in need, but what do liberals have to do with your experience?

  494. JAMES TAYLOR -The Human Primer

    September 6, 2017 at 7:50 pm

You are both sovereign with free will. USE IT! The Red Cross has no authority over you or your generosity. As a Human Being you ignore their insane antics. If you complied, then you too are part of the problem. You gave them authority to stop you from doing what you know is needed, urgent and necessary. To back down… gees, no way. They are obviously misinformed, idiots, not human or insane. Ignore them from now on. You find them everywhere. Being the best of yourself can not be outlawed or stopped by anyone.

There are people saying they are “Red Cross” but are actually scammers. Sounds like these people ran into some of them. The Red Cross has been accepting any food that has been donated and with many thanks. And, getting it to the people who needed it. Have been watching what’s been going on for days. And, the Red Cross Volunteers are busting hump to get to people. Most of the are soaking wet. Don’t believe everything you read.

When our place flooded in WV, we were tried, hot and very muddy. The Red Cross showed up as a man in a pickup truck. Asked if we were hungry. We hadn’t had anything. So he gave us a cold sandwich and water. He never got out of his truck. That was all we seen of them.

  502. Carolyn D Patterson

    September 7, 2017 at 2:17 am

Amen… My daughter had 3000 meals to take to the church’s that housed flood victims, and other places that FEMA and Red Cross were not concerned with. They wanted to out do each other for the money donations. FEMA was going to destroy the meals and said they could not be dispersed! That they were there now and it ihad to be done their way. No food donations were to be taken by locals or anyone else. My daughter would not let them take the meals and had the helicopter take them to another area that needed help. Between the, Red Cross and FEMA they would let people starve. It is so hard. So many people gave thru their hearts, no donations are to be turned away! It’s a money thing with the Red Cross because of the money the higher up makes! Check it out!

You would really be horrified if you knew how much donated money is used to pay 1 million dollar salaries lavish fund raising parties and first class travel for the executive staff. Spend a little time and look up what percentage of collected donations actually get to the victims. I quit donating to them 35 years ago.

  505. Catori

    September 7, 2017 at 8:05 am

I have learned when it comes to hot food, a lot of organizations frown upon it being donated. they worry about the proper prep, storage, transportation in combo with food poisoning. Did they need to be rude about it? No. Did they have proper concern, yes.

When it comes to organizations not using all donated money on the cause that is 100% normal! Not everyone who works for the red cross is a volunteer. It does take money to keep it running. They do have over head expenses, bills to pay etc.

Until a CPA tells me they are abusing their funds, I am going to treat this like any other piece of gossip, like its gossip and not to be believed in full.

Sorry to say but this is typical of the Red Cross and the very reason that I will NEVER donate to them. When Johnstown had the last flood – our area DONATED 4 truck loads of groceries. At the time bananas were selling for 15 cents per pound and the Red Cross was SELLING them to the people of Johnstown for 25 cents per pound. Remember – this was DONATED food.

don’t ever give to Red Cross. they lie steal and cheat. When I was a baby in mom’s arms we were very poor and she went to Red Cross, with baby bottle in hand, for some milk to put in the bottle. They said she had to “pay” for it. She had no money so she was escorted out of the office Now is that civil? I’ll never ever give to that organization which is the richest organization in the world. They “feed” their own pockets FIRST. Never ever give to them. The Salvation Army is #1 in my book. as are the Christian Samaritans Purse, Franklin Grahams organization.

It’s been my experience that crookedness is about equal on both sides of the political isle. Such a touching story till you got to the next to last sentence. The “ran by liberals” comment was very very wrong. I feel for your situation and those in need who are just barely surviving this ordeal. As Texans we help anybody, not just Texans. I noticed one Councilman today telling folks not to donate to the red cross because of just this garbage they call help in south Texas. I agree with you on how they run things, they do hold back much of what they take in. Never know when they may need to take something to South America………? Yep, they do that as well. As the councilman said they did a piss poor job. But really, it’s about the folks who are having to live this nightmare. If we leave Political Tics out of this we will just end up helping each other and being polite about it thank you.

I have had people tell me stories way back in the days of my Dads time in the service in Korea how it was’t the best in the west! How they didn’t always help people who asked for help, they picked and choose, which I thought was strange cause all they have to do is ask and people donate to help. Its like the girlscouts the girls sale cookies on the street to earn money for the scouts, while the leaders, president, visepresident and so on have plush offices with gold door knobs and nice cars. You just don’t know how power and money rate compared to human life.

I have never donated to the “RED CROSS” and now for sure I won’t. The above story needs to forwarded to The President ASAP.

Seems this is typical of the Red Cross. My Uncle served in the WW11 and it was not the Red Cross up at the front lines serving coffee and other food but the Salvation Army. When the Red Cross did show up it was after the fight was over and no danger to them. Where as the Salvation Army was right there up on the front lines feeding the troops. Give to the Red Cross,NOT ME!

I have never liked the attitude of the Red Cross and haven’t given them any contributions in years. They have never treated people like people any time I have seen them at work. They are bullies each and every one of them. I’m glad that someone could help the people of Texas.

Was heartbroken and immoderately vexed by the venality of the Red Cross representatives. I persistently donated to the Red Cross for more than 23 years, until some years ago, upon learning the obscene salaries of those who run the Red Cross, and the millions (from donations!) that they frittered on excessively fancy telephone systems.

While you’ve engaged me to spread the word about the unacceptable behavior of those two people, make no mistake that you’ve revealed yourself to be ignorant and low-class with your closing commentary.

It is sad, and challenging, that you have no clue what the word “liberal” means, and I’m thankful that Newton’s 3rd law of physics guarantees unconditionally that life will deliver back to you the pettiness that you demonstrate with such low-class comments at the end of this article. What terrible failures your parents are counted as, genuine losers to have raised you so poorly. Thank heavens for “What goes around….”

Kind of like the Humane Society and PETA where less than 1% actually goes to helping the animals, sounds like to me.

Kind of like the Humane Society and PETA where less than 1% actually goes to helping the animals, sounds like to me. All these organizations need to be audited especially after I read the comment from one person who worked for a company that provided food for Red Cross only to have the truck loads come back with leftover food that went into dumpsters. Really?? This country is so wasteful. All the food that is thrown away at stores and restaurants could be used to feed the homeless and people who are starving because they can’t afford enough food. Why just throw it away because it might make someone sick who cares if they are starving.

This is typical of the RED CROSS and the type of people who run it… it is more about how they look and not what they do to alleviate suffering. They stink and I will never ever give money to them and hope to convince others to avoid supporting them.

The volunteer who reported this was/is a saint. The couple running the RED CROSS operation who interfered with her work are “posers” or they would have stepped right up and help distribute the hot meals!! This is a shame!

Oh and it is not about that the RED CROSS people are liberals, they are probably stupid conservatives…POSERS like our new President… worried about appearance of what they do and not about the function and services they should be providing!! (Elizabeth Dole, wife of Republican Bob Dole use to be the Red Cross president – earned 1 million annual salary for doing very little!!)

Individuals can be a very bad reflection on any group, charity or not. I do believe that most charities tend to look after themselves first. Of course, we also have the control freaks who just ‘have to be in charge.’. However I would like to congratulate you and your colleagues for your very worthy efforts. Thank you from my heart

Right. How DARE the Red Cross protect already miserable people from the POTENTIAL of food borne illness! What AWFUL, AWFUL people! Does the Red Cross really believe ppl who have lost homes, possessions, were slogging through sometimes waist deep water wouldn’t welcome a hot burger (when it is in the 80’s there) and potentially diarrhea?

The RC workers AND the lady who brought them could BOTH have done better at communicating. That said, the food was distributed, maybe not ‘hot’ but in 80 degree weather, that’s not exactly a bad thing.

Look, I get ‘conservatives’ don’t like ‘rules’… unless they are imposing them upon other people they do not ‘approve’ of, but they exist for a reason. Probably the donation lady took appropriate measures to ensure the food would be safe upon arrival. (one would hope, anyway) However the Red Cross, prior to distributing that food had to be fairly certain that it WAS safe, to do otherwise would at best, be irresponsible.

Yeah it sounds like ‘awful liberals’ but had the food in transport crossed over to having food borne illness and we had a double health crisis heaped on top of the weather/devastation/flooding crisis… that’s just stupid.

would be intelligent to bring COLD sandwiches so they could have been protected from the potential for food borne illness?

This doesn’t surprise me at all. My house flooded the same not the tornado hit Joplin. We had to drive to another town to sign up for help from Red Cross. We never saw or heard from them again. I am disabled so I needed help. When I finally got ahold of someone on the phone after several transfers from person to person I was told, “Sorry we’ve passed out all the items we had.” Not one person showed up to help or called to see if I needed or had help. I have my two gallon pin for donating blood but they sure didn’t help me!!!

My understanding is that the Red Cross uses 10% of donated funds to actually do stuff..that 90% goes to admin….AND later they send a bill for the services rendered. I could be wrong but that is what I hear.

Contribute to a religious group serving the those volunteering help in the recovery. I bet they don’t question good intentions. Red Cross thinks they have to control who gets what . Guess they think they are big brother or the federal government.

As someone familiar with Red Cross feeding operations, there are some salient points missing from this story.

The Red Cross cannot accept food not prepared in a commercial, licensed kitchen and prepared to health code standards. The food mentioned may have been turned away due to it not being commercially prepared to standards or having fallen below the minimum safe temperature. Do we potentially want up to 400 people with food poisoning? The are no food safety waivers during disasters.

In instances with home made food, the usual Red Cross policy is to let clients know that a church or family is offering food off-site. It then becomes the client’s decision to consume or not consume the offered food.

It is unreasonable to expect the Red Cross to accept and dispense from Red Cross marked vehicles and facilities dubious food.

This story is an unfortunate example that might have been avoided by coordination beforehand and/or with some pre-disaster training.

The very reason I do not donate to Red Cross and another one, too much of the money goes to salaries.
